"Parts falling off the D800??"

Pennsylvania, US

See the attached link below to the DPR Forum. I can't see what the fellow is talking about and it does not seem that I have the part on my D800 that he says fell off of his. Makes me a little concerned. Everything works fine on mine but I am worried that I lost it also and no longer have a weather resistant body. I can't find any pictures of that side (camera rear right) showing the card slots and card slot door where the fellow says it fell off. Someone else also commented on DPR that it fell off of his D800/e.

Dan,

I think I figured out what he is talking about. Slide the door covering the memory card back but hold it closed. Now from the side look at the space between the door hinge and the rest of the camera body. The piece show appears to be going into the body with it's edge parallel to the hinge.

I think is jut acts as bumber for the door when it openas and not a weather resistant fitting.

Here is a pic of what the card door should look like closed. Mine seems just fine.

I had the same problem when I got my D800 (7-16). When I opened the memory card door the little rectangle piece of rubber fell out. It fell out occasionally after that when I opened the memory card cover. It seems to do more than act as a bumper because when it is not in place it looks like there is deep hole - a space in the seal.

I thought about gluing it in place but a more serious issue developed with my D800 - a crack in the sensor glass - so I sent the little rubber piece back in a plastic bag with the camera to Melville, along with a SD card with photos and XMP files from the last photos I took before the cracks and with the cracks.

The crack in the sensor glass is more disconcerting as I did nothing to cause it that I can figure out. I did not attempt to clean my sensor as it was clean and clear of blemishes. I never locked up the mirror to view the sensor until I downloaded the photos I had just taken and saw the lines on all the thumbnails in LR4.

When I locked up the mirror to view the sensor I was expecting to see some major crud - like thread or hair to blow off of it. Instead I was horrified to see the cracks in the glass inside the sensor.

I shipped my D800 to Melville 2nd day air on Wednesday 8-22 and it was signed for in Melville Friday 8-24 9:59 AM. And I have not heard from them yet.

I did see another thread on Dpreview by someone who had a similar cracked sensor on their D800e from the end of June.

First photos I saw with crack in the sensor.

The battery door is supposed to come off, but perhaps not fall off. I knocks it loose once. This other stuff is slightly disconcerting.
