"NikoniansPress Mastering the Nikon D7000"
Thu 21-Jun-12 05:54 AM by jrp

San Pedro Garza García, MX

It is our pride and pleasure to present you the latest book of our NikoniansPress series...

MASTERING THE NIKON D7000
by Nikonian Darrell Young (DigitalDarrell), who has outdone himself
with this book, his seventh under the NikoniansPress imprint.

This joint venture between nikonians.org and Rocky Nook has developed
a strong following in the "camera instruction" genre and Darrell's
fastidious attention to detail has been the key ingredient in that trend.

UPDATE: This new volume will be available for shipping in early August.

NEWER UPDATE: This book is now in its third printing. Thank you.

Thank you all Nikonians members who posted images for possible
selection as chapter dividers in this book.

NOW also available in Kindle format:

To celebrate this edition, as customary in Nikonians Press Books,
it will carry a 50% discount voucher code for a one year Gold Membership.
This will be added to your existing Silver or Gold membership or
can be used to upgrade from Basic.

Have a great time

If I click on the Book image it takes me to Amazon to pre-order, how will I get the 50% discount for a Gold membership, will the discount voucher be inside the book? Just want to be sure I haven't missed a place on the Nikonians web site to order it.

I believe Amazon is now showing early August. Seems like a long lag time if the presses were running end of April/early May.

A post on Facebook today by the "Mastering Your Nikon Camera" group says the book will be available no later than July 28th, and likely sooner. Due to the length of the book (496 pages) mandates that it be printed in China rather than the USA. This will save money, but add about one month to the release date.

It is a long time..The camera has been out since what, october/november or so? I had the book for the D90 and thought it was great, and am sure the D7000 book will be worth the wait, but seriously, this seems to going on forever...

Any chance for a Kindle edition? Having it in a portable format would be very useful.
David Busch's Guide to the D7000 is available as a Kindle book, and has received some favorable reviews. I'd assume that at the moment his would be your main competition.

Thanks Bill - unfortunately we poor cousins over here in the UK cannot download this book, or others, from the US Kindle store and the site states that it's not available to us Brits. Thanks anyway.

Sorry for the dumb question.

I just ordered Mastering the Nikon 7000 along with another Nikon Creative Lighting book from Amazon. Does this mean when I receive the order I can use the code inside Mastering the Nikon D7000 to get 50% discount on a "Gold" membership?

Thanks,

Amazon just sent an email 7/26/2011 stating they were sending Nikon Creating Lighting book and will send the Mastering the Nikon 7000 when it comes available.

Well, the release date has come and gone and still no book. Barnes and Nobel are saying maybe the 15th of August. Amazon isn't saying anything. Looks like the D7000 will become the D7100 before the book is out. You would think that 9 months would be long enough to get a how to book on the market. Everybody else has had their books out for many weeks. Time to switch to the other folks. So long Rocky Nook.

AMAZON NOW SAYS 15 AUGUST TOO. BOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

Couldn't agree more. The camera has been out for what 9 months? After buying and reading "the other" D7000 book, I am really feeling less and less of a need for this one and will probably end up canceling my order through amazon.com . Sorry Darrell and Rocky Nook...While I did think the D90 book was superb, and was looking forward to this one, I can't wait forever.

There are many possible issues with regards to the paper version. Since the eBook is available, I would guess it is a logistics problem or production issue of some kind. Either getting the needed material to the printer, printing equipment problem, scheduling, binding, or shipping problem.

I now buy both the eBook and printed copy. With the eBook option I get both the PDF for my computer, and the ePub for my Nook Color eReader.

I also buy through Oreilly Media and I have access to any errata or revisions.

Not all of us want to spend the money twice over for the same product. While I could afford it, I can't justify it.

As for issues with the paper version causing the lateness, I would imagine there are many options that could be used to get around any problem, (different printing company, etc).

Seriously, this is really, really late. The book should have been available late spring/start of summer at the latest.

If you would check the pricing, you would find that the paper version is 34.95, eBook is 14.95, and paper + eBook is 38.45. or 3.50 over the paper book price. And that is less the the eBook. To have a copy of all my reference books on a small compact reader on an airplane or in a remote location is worth that small of a price. Since I ride public transportation to and from work, it is also a good time to read these books.

I have all my Nikon product manuals, and many color reference books available in a small light device. The addition of book does not increase the weight of the device.

Don't cancle your orders. Yes, it has been a long wait but I bought from Rocky Nook to support the community here. A few more weeks won't make or break my heart and I'm sure it won't prevent anyone from taking the perfect picture. You shouldn't be out any money yet.

I bought the D7000 in Oct 2010. It was my very first DSLR and my very first Nikon. I've read the manual more times than I can count and I think I'm taking ok pics with it.

The physical print book arrived Monday in New York harbor and is going through Customs now. By the end of this week, it will be in the distribution system. Preorders will be filled first. I expect deliveries to start before mid-month. Amazon.com is always very conservative in their projections.

The Kindle eBook version is already available on Amazon.com for US$9.95.

ePub, Mobi, and PDF eBook versions are already available at OReilly.com in one package for US$14.95.

The delay in the printed version was caused by the complexity of the camera. The book is 496 pages long. In order to keep from having to raise the price on the book, Rocky Nook chose to print it in China. This book is thick!

I'm sure you'll like the deep information in the book. Your D7000 camera is very complex, yet very powerful. Imagine needing 496 pages to describe it. It's a very mature and robust camera and ought to last you for many years of use.

Thanks for your patience!

Thank you for the update.

I think many do not understand the complexity involved in printing a quality four color book in a global environment. Customs can be a real bottle neck in some countries. It is far different than printing to one's ink jet printer.

This is a problem for U.S. vendors like Amazon and Barnes & Nobel taht can not sell electronic documents to users that do not have a U.S. Credit Card, U.S. Address, and accessing the electronic store through a U.S. IP service.

I just checked O\'Reilly Customer Service - Order Information and they have a U.S. and a UK shopping cart, so you might be able to purchase the paper back book and the e format books. The text from the site:

"Ordering Online

"For most of our products you can choose to order from our US Shopping Cart or our UK Shopping Cart. If you live in the UK, Europe, Middle East or Africa the UK Shopping Cart may provide you with better shipping rates. As you browse our product pages, just click the "Add to Cart" or "Add to UK Cart" button. When you are done shopping, review the items in your shopping cart, make any necessary changes, and complete the ordering process. The complete list on oreilly.com includes a alphabetical list of products."

Amazon went ahead and filled half of my order. I just rec'd The Nikon Creative Lighting System by Mike Hagen from the NikoniansPress. Amazon indicated the other half, Mastering the Nikon D7000 would be deliverd later in Aug. Since Amazon didn't charge extra shipping I can't complain to much!!

Hopefully it will be worth the wait.

Friends,

I need your help!

All the eBook versions of Mastering the Nikon D7000 are now available and people have been downloading and reading like crazy. The print edition is due out by the 15th, and is already at the distribution center as of the 5th.

There have been several good reviews of the book already on Amazon.com. May I please ask any that have been reading an eBook version to create a good review on Amazon.com? Early 5-star reviews of a book make a huge difference in the success of the book across its entire shelf life. I would truly appreciate it if you would take the time to review the book. Here is a link:

I thank each of you in advance for your help!

I got an email yesterday (10th) from the book's USA distributor, with the following message:

"The stock for Mastering the Nikon D7000 was received this morning by our warehouser and will begin shipping to customers within the next couple of days."

Preorders will be filled shortly and the book will be generally available on Amazon.com, BarnesAndNoble.com, OReilly.com, and in fine bookstores. There is so much information in this book that it ought to be worth the wait.

We are putting some methods in place that will allow future Mastering books to be available more quickly. I truly appreciate the patience of the thousands of Nikonians who have preordered the book.

I'm so glad you are enjoying my book! It makes all the hard work worthwhile when people benefit from the work. There are quite a few unique features in the D7000. I try to point them out in the book. Some are reporting that they've learned of new things their camera can do, even after using it for months previous to getting the book.

Thank all of you for buying the book. I am now officially writing full time and my entire income comes from my books. Your buying my book is helping support my family, and allows me to write future books and eBooks.

I hope that as many as possible will give my book a good review on Amazon.com. Those 5-star reviews are making a difference in sales! Several here have reviewed the book and I truly appreciate it. I hope that many more will take the time to say why they like it in a review.

Also, if you'll let others know about the books here and on other forums, it will help me stay in the business of writing. I hope to support Nikonians for years to come. Thanks for allowing me to be your chosen author! It is a humbling experience.

I, too, carry my D7000 book on my iPhone. I bought the package deal that Oreilly.com offers and keep the book with me on all my readers. I use it as a reference (isn't that funny).

Make sure you have a fully charged battery, a comfortable chair, and your D7000. If you want, you can also have the camera's manual within reach. This is a hands-on book designed to teach you about every part of your camera. It's a big book with a tremendous amount of deep information. The camera is very complex. With that complexity comes a lot of power. I hope my book opens up the camera for you!

This book is fantastic. I am only through the first 100 pages and I have already learned a great deal about not only the camera but a variety of techniques like the lightning picture that I would have never thought of and can't wait to try out.

It explains very clearly what the settings will do for you or not do for you. I have had a D40, D70 and D90 before this so I am quite familiar with Nikon DSLRs. I think for a DSLR beginner this book is indispensible, but even for an old hand it has some extremely useful tidbits.

No problem. I finally got around to installing the firmware update and I noticed in the release notes that Long Exp NR now kicks in at 1s instead of 8s. Does that change your opinion with respect to turning it on?

Not really because Long exp. NR uses the dark frame (black frame) subtraction method for noise reduction, which is much less destructive to the image than regular "blurring" noise reduction.

In black frame subtraction, two exposures are taken. One is the original exposure and the second an exposure with the shutter closed. The second exposure is a dark frame that shows only the noise. That locations of the noise in the second dark frame image are subtracted from the first image, without massive blurring and resharpening.

Also, with the D7000, the second exposure is often less than the length of the first exposure, unlike earlier Nikons, which require two exposures of identical length.

I leave Long exp. NR set to On all the time. This type of noise reduction does not affect regular grainy noise in the image, just amp noise (heat noise) and hot or bright pixels that show up on longer exposures. They are subtracted from the original frame because the location of the noise should not change over the course of two subsequent exposures.

I find it interesting that Nikon's firmware update has reduced the time from 8 seconds to 1 second before turning on Long exp. NR. Could it be that the D7000's sensor is more sensitive to heat buildup for longer exposures. I am going to have to do some research on this issue.

I've had my D7000 since January and have shot many images with it. It was an upgrade from the D5000 that was an upgrade from a D40. At the time I bought another book that helped me become comfortable with what I thought were most of my camera's capabilities. I've gotten a lot of nice pictures using it. Still, there were some functions that I did not fully comprehend even after reading about them several times. The focusing system was one of them and not understanding it has left me with some out of focus images that I really wanted to capture properly. I knew that the limitation was my lack of understanding and not a problem with the camera itself.

So, I bought the Kindle version of this book. What a revelation! It gave me a newer, more powerful camera without having to buy a new model. After reading the sections on the autofocus system and picture controls I modified some settings on my camera. My image quality immediately improved and my percentage of usable shots went up. Looking back, I wish now that I had gotten Darrell's D5000 book when that camera was brand new.

Darrell's book is my third D7000 book....the others were both the Busch books (good but Darrell's is better). I absolutely love the book! Left a fat review on Amazon for it! This has gotta be the most detailed book out there on the D7000, and I really feel it is coming from someone who personally owns the camera and uses it...not just someone who owns the camera for the book.

Thanks for putting an awesome book out there, it really goes into details in some where the other books just gave a brief explaination of the topic.

Thanks to all who have purchased Mastering the Nikon D7000. It seems to be doing very well. Thank you for the reviews too!

May I remind any that are inclined to go to Amazon.com and add a nice review. Those current 32 five-star reviews are really helping the book sell well.

If you are looking for the Nikonians.org GOLD membership coupon, it is at the very end of the table of contents section, just after the camera body references section and on the page before chapter 1 starts.

Have received the book a couple of days ago now, and I must say that it's a really great addition for the full comprehension of the D7000 inside and out.

Thanks a lot Darell, and keep up the good work! Hope it sells as well as the book is written!

Darrel-- I got my copy of "Mastering the Nikon D7000" a couple of weeks ago, and I have been poring through it ever since. I like the format and the suggestions. My only wish would be for more technique and pro application for the video side of the camera, but I realize that goes beyond the scope of the book. Other than that, excellent.

However, there was no half-off coupon for Nikonians included with the book, and I'm wondering if that is a common oversight and how it may be rectified. Best regards, -BC-

Just to add to the list of satisfied readers. I bought the Kindle version of this book and it was invaluable in setting up and understanding how the D7000 works. I'm pretty old school and I needed to understand some how some of the new options worked and the book was easy to read and concise. I didn't have any questions about whatever I was reading about after going over the appropriate section. I would say that the goal of the book was met with flying colors.

Kudos, Darrell. Great job!

Again, thanks to all the recent purchasers of Mastering the Nikon D7000.

If any of you feel inclined, may I ask that you write a good review of the book at Amazon.com (or wherever you purchased it online), explaining what you liked about the book personally. It has been doing well, and I think all the excellent reviews have made a big difference. My publishing company rates me by how many of you like my books. 5-Star reviews are quite convincing!

Even though Nikon is a bit "underwater" right now, things should look up by spring. New cameras are coming and I'd love to write about them. Your great reviews make that possible, Thank you!

How invigorating for an author to hear words like this. Writing a long book is an arduous process. It is worthwhile when an author sees readers enjoying his work. You've made my day. Thank you!

The demand was so high that the book sold out within 90 days of release. It has been reprinted, but it will be late January before stock will be back in the stores. I have about 10 books in stock myself. I can send you an autographed copy for $21 plus $5 shipping to the USA only. Email me at the contact link at www.photographywriter.com and I will send you a PayPal invoice, then mail the book on Monday. Be sure to use the included coupon for 50% off of the Nikonians Gold Membership.

I would like to add on to the positive comments about this book. I am fairly familiar with Nikon cameras having shot digital for a while now. I also had the book for the D300. I decided with the D7000 to start at the front and work through.

I have already benefited from a couple things I didn't think about before:
1) Deleting selected images. I often have deleted one by one, had I not reviewed this basic section I "already knew" I would not have challenged my methods of deletion. I now may use the multi-selection then delete all selected at once as an optional method.

2) File naming, I changed from DSC to D7K. But, after reading Darrell's method, again, I thought harder about my way of doing things. I now use "7K0" and will change to "7K1" at first roll over. At a glance this will allow me to see quickly the rough number of shots:

7K0_0838 = 838 shots
7K0_4572 = 4,572 shots

change to 7K1 at roll over (9999)
7K1_1233 = 11,233 shots

change to 7K2 at next roll over (9999)
7K2_1233 = 21,233 shots
7K2_4568 = 24,568 and so on.

Anyway, I know I will benefit from the rest of the book. I just wanted to say I am already benefiting from the first few pages and am looking forward to working my way through the whole thing. Even the sections I think I already know I am sure I will pick something up.

Thanks Darrell for your great work!

-Tim

I own the book and love it. It is also one of those books that I really prefer to have the "real" book. However, on a recent trip to Bali, I decided to check to see if it was available for the Kindle - and it was! I bought that, and saved needing to carry the book on vacation. The book is very well indexed, which makes the Kindle version easy to use, and search. Might want to consider this approach if you have a Kindle - while you wait for the paper version.

It appears that the print version is again available at oreilly.com. On Tuesday they were not offering the combo of the print and ebook versions, and they said the print version would be delayed. Today they are offering the combo package and don't mention anything about a delay for the print version. I just ordered the combo package. Looking forward to start reading the ebook tomorrow.

If you look at Mastering the Nikon D7000 at O'Reily Media, you can buy the book in the Daisy, ePub, mobi, or PDF formats. I believe you can use iBooks to read ePubs. You may need to buy an app to read the PDF format. It is also possible to get a discount on a package of the hard copy and electronic formats when purchased at the same time.

O'Reily Media has a U.S. and UK shopping cart. You will need to use the UK Shopping cart.

The availability of the electronic formats is a political issue and it's resolution requires a vendor to be registered with the EU and collect the VAT amd other taxes as needed.

Glad to have helped.

I forgot to mention, if you register your book, you will have access to corrections in the volume as they are found and corrected. You can also download the PDF format file.

I am sure this might be a dumb question, but how do you register the book?

Thanks in advance

I don't intend on sounding disrepectful with my next comment, but what makes you or Thom Hogan or Ken Rockwell such experts with the operation of the cameras/lenses you review or write handbooks to guide the rest of us? How is it you get your hands on nuances in their operation that is not, apparently, in the ownners manual that we, the plebs, couldn't extract ourselves, given enough time. And yet you folks are able to put out a manual with all these little nuances not soon after the introduction of the new camera. I'm just a little puzzled, too, how this information doesn't find itself in the owners manuals, when the manufacturers, would, I expect, want us to know everything about their camera to enable us to make full use of their advanced features. AND, you still have families that love you so obviously you haven't cloistered yourselves in some little room experimenting, ad infinitum, to learn the cameras detailed operation, like we seem to have to, given the dialogue in Nikonians. BTW, I did buy Thom's D80 guide (I gave it away with the traded camera for my D7000) and found maybe 10% pretty useful, the rest was basic camera operation which I was already familiar with. That said, I'd like to get a manual that contains only the nuances and not necessarily the basic, "How to take a picture" instruction. Is there such a beast? Darell, your printed book has gotten a lot of good reviews, so I may make that purchase, now that's available at Amazon.

MJHatch,

It's not so much about being an "expert" as being able to explain technical things in a way that most can understand. Before I start writing a book, I spend several weeks with the camera, shooting action, nature, and events, and testing it with Nikon accessories. I shoot several thousand pictures with the camera in a relatively short time. I read the manual from front to back seeking new bits of information buried deeply in obscure locations. I compare my experience with the new camera and the older Nikons.

Then I start writing. As I come to each individual function, I test it thoroughly, comparing it to previous Nikons and noting any new features. I go through each menu while configuring the camera and taking more pictures to make sure I understand how the function works. Then I write it down easy-to-understand language.

Bottom line: None of the individual functions in a Nikon camera are overly complex. However, there are hundreds of functions that can be configured in multiple ways. The manual is hard for most people to deal with because it puts bits of important knowledge in multiple places, instead of just one place. My books pull all related functionality together into one place, explain things in common everyday terms, and add my personal experiences and recommendations for each setting.

Anyone could do exactly what I do, by spending a lot of time with the camera and figuring out how it works. The reason people like my books is that I try my best to make it easier for them to learn about their camera. I am just a hillbilly from Tennessee with a flair for explaining things. Given enough time anyone could ferret out the details by themselves, and many do; however, it is a waste of time when someone has already done it for you. My books are for Nikonians who would rather have a little help instead of digging through a manual. I did it for you, that's all!

OK, then. THanks for the explanation. Tis true, the manual does put related things in multiple places and does cause the pages to become dog-eared when going to page 273 from page 54 as recommended from page 5. Sheesh!!

Again, when you have worked with the whole line of Nikons, basically the next one is just a slight reiteration of the previous ones. I know I experienced that when "thoroughly"(not quite ALL) learning the D80 the then moving to the D7000 or helping someone with their "new" D90 or 5100

Hi Darrell,

I have a D40 and I'm working on a D7000. I'm currently reading your book on the D7000. It’s simplified so many of the options and given me some new tips to even try on my D40. That’s as good as it gets for a instructional book, great read!

Though your question was directed directly to Darrell, mj, I'd like to respectfully chime in with a thought.

Generally speaking, the manuals that come with our cameras (or other complex electronic equipment) lean toward explaining functions in a pretty nuts-and-bolts manner. "To do this, press this button."

What I really appreciate about Darrell's book is that he gives good examples of where choosing one setting over another might be advantageous. In other words, for me at least, he connects the dots between *function* and *application*.

His writing style is very friendly and easy to understand as well, which makes digesting what might be difficult technical concepts (especially to a newer user) easier.

I work in a technical industry as a writer, and trust me, the last people you want writing a manual for a new product are the ones who designed it. Yes, they know the product better than anyone, but they've been "living" inside that product for so long that they tend to assume everyone one knows as much as they do. The best manuals, in my opinion, are written by someone who understands the product, has real world experience with it (or similar products), and didn't have a hand in designing it.

Does Nikon want us to know all the ins and outs of their products? I would say they do, yes. But I haven't seen too many manuals (from Nikon or anyone else) that are written by people who have a true gift for explaining and teaching, and that's what folks like Darrell and others (I like Thom Hogan's books, too) bring to the table.

A well-written supplement to the manufacturer's manual costs no more than a good SD card and less than a decent filter. Photography is not an inexpensive hobby (ask our collective spouses/significant others!) so in the big picture, $30 or $40 on a book that will let you extract every last goody out of your camera is a great investment in my view.

Sincerely,

Jim

For anyone willing, I hope you'll review Mastering the Nikon D7000 on Amazon.com.

A fellow gave my book a downright awful review claiming I was simply cut-and-pasting from the manual and that the book was useless. I haven't commented, but it seems clear this fellow had an agenda of some sort. Who knows! One person replied to him and asked the fellow if he had actually read the book. He has not replied back. I'm curious about this because his post had real vehemence, almost anger.

The only way to counteract something like this is to have some good reviews from people who have actually read the book. If you have read my book and thought is was worth a nice review, a few words would really help me. Thanks in advance!

Obviously somebody out there is envying your hard work or possibly anybody that spend a lot of time trying to get a result as you do with your books!

Simply because they wish to do the same, but do not have the 'capability or the will' to do it!

This kind of people are part of the Human Race and unfortunately we just have to ignore them and certainly a few very good review should shut them up forever!

Especially if they are from Nikonians.org - full of experienced people that actually BUY your books.

Here in the UK incidentally, since I purchased the eBook version I missed to buy the D7000.

I ordered the D7000 on October 2011 and after several weeks the supplier could not deliver and refunded me.

Then I did not purchase it at £. 729 from another dealer as I did not have enough money and do not like to overspend on credit cards too much - it now is at around £. 869 from the same dealer.

I am waiting the beginning of February hoping for a downturn to around £. 750 and then I will buy it and use the £. 100 saved towards accessories.

I am looking forward to use it with the help of your very good 'copied' book - .

Happy Imaging!

I had Darrel's book on the D90 and passed it on to the new owner, because it was just too good to not have in the hands of the new owner- I cannot see it sitting unread on a shelf... I purchased this one in "Nook" format but now regret not buying paper (and still might). I am a renaissance man, and just like the smell and feel of an old fashion paper book. BUT, since I read Nook and Kindle books on my iPad, which I always have on me, I always have the electronic copy, for when I feel like reading or need to look up something. I ALWAYS recommend Darrel's books when asked what manual to get on a camera.

Hi,

New member to Nikonian (about a month). Just upgrade (2 wks ago) from a D5000 to a D7000. With the D5000, found the owner manual to not be very helpful. Bought 5 books from various Photographer Authors. Each Author having their on style of writing. Helps with difficult situations where one Author may not explain it well enough to sink in, another Author's will approach it from a different direction and then the light bulb turns on over your head.

When I upgraded to the D7000, knowing the owners manual was not going to be of much help, I selected 3 of the Authors from my D5000 books that I liked. They had D7000 manuals out. While making my selection, your book popped up. Said what the heck, I'll buy it too.

All the books came in together. Now the question is which one to start reading. Had the new camera and it was burning a hole in my hand wanting to be used. Decided to read a few pages from each book and see which one I liked best.

Read a few pages of the Authors I was familiar with and then picked up your book last to compare it with the others.

I HAVE NOT PUT DOWN YOUR BOOK. AWESOME, EXCELLENT, LEARNING A LOT.

So why have you cost me money? I don't need the other books. Should have looked here first. My bad.

Hope I can sell the other books on eBay or Craiglist and get some money back.

Thanks. Excellent job.

I've recently upgraded my camera body and found this book indispensable.

Since I was going on holiday from Scotland to Toronto about 2 months after getting my shiny new D7000 body, I decided to buy the digital version from Amazon so I had a copy with me on my Kindle. It proved to be an excellent move as I had a ready reference with me all the time.

Well done Darrell!

It is gratifying to hear that so many Nikonians are enjoying Mastering the Nikon D7000. It takes a lot of work and time to write one of these books and, honestly, the payoff for me is not just the additional income, its the fact that so many people benefit from my work.

I just got notice that Rocky Nook reprinted the book again. This is the third printing of the first edition, having sold out three times in less than a year. The demand for the book seems to be unabated and it stays in the top photography books on Amazon.com. I have YOU to thank for this. Your support for my books and NikoniansPress is simply outstanding.

The Nikon D7000 is one of the most amazing and mature digital cameras made, and you own one!

I have to agree. I just bought a D7000 and decided to get something other than the user's manual. I came across this book and, incidentally, that's how I found the Nikonians group. The book is wonderful.

The book is very clear, and usable for both new photographers as well as old timers. Thanks.

First post to the Nikonians community! I've ordered a Nikon D7000 from B&H Photo (which is now backordered). I also bought the "Mastering the Nikon D7000" book, which I've begun to read along with the User's Manual that I downloaded from the Nikon site.

I'm looking forward to using some of the increased capabilities of this camera, after owning a Nikon D90 since 2008. I'm especially pleased that I'll be able to use my modest collection of legacy AI-S lens with this camera.

Great book, very concise. Great effort from Darrell Young. I highly recommend using more than one source of reference for any digital camera, image processing software. For the D7K, I also rely heavily on David Busch and the inimitable Ken Rockwell (website only). All three together have given me a relatively fast start up with the D7K. The concern of most importance is to shoot regularly under as many lighting conditions as possible to force one in to using the myriad controls on this camera until using them becomes second nature.

Thanks everyone for the kind words. It is good to keep hearing from you regularly. I'm glad you like Mastering the Nikon D7000. It makes the hard work of creating one of these books worthwhile.

I got the D7000 for Christmas (thanks Mrs MasterDabber) and ordered the hardcopy book on Christmas Day. I've managed to get out a couple of times since Christmas Day (despite the weather) and I'm starting to get to grips with the new toy. The book arrived today and I've been dipping into it for the last few hours.

I've already learnt a lot (lots more options on the D7000 versus my old and trusty D50) and the layout and style of the book suits me perfectly. Thanks a lot Darrell.

I agree that the style is very interesting and there is a wealth of details. I bought Kindle version. There are many options existing in the user manual (of course, that's why the user manual comes with the camera), but also many more information that I either missed or didn't pay attention. Darrell's style practically helps to direct the reader towards the useful details. I specially appreciate Darrell's recommendations at the end of chapters and have set my camera to these values which are very convenient to me.

I bought my copy (download to my Kindle) and love the information and simplicity of it all. I can't wait to get deeper into it and learn more about my D7000's capabilities.

Thank you for the book, Darrell!! Didn't realize we're practically neighbors.

Scott
