Prior shots from 70-300 4.5-5.6 were..meh...

This taken in back yard...some light pollution..on d200, 300 f/4 af-s, 1/60 @ f/8, iso 100..cropped @ 80-90%...DxO sharpened/noise reduce (i am totally playong with DxO b4 I decide to buy).....prob a little over exposed, prob should have used faster shutter speed...

compared to 70-300 vr though (with vr off on tripod of corse), this is way better..def the lens, and maybe my new gitzo/q10 combo too..

Hi Richard,

Yes, you did overdo the exposure a bit . However, if you reduce exposure while rendering the raw I think you will improve the image.

Personally I like to "overexpose" the moon a bit, pushing the histogram to the right, but not burning any highlights in any of the color channels (usually red burns first). So... unless changed things in Dx0, my own preferred exposure would not be terribly different than yours.

I do that because lunar images are inherently noisy, especially the Maria (the dark areas), and even at base ISO. Pushing exposure should help with that.

Looking at an adjusted image, it is clear to me that the lens did very well, and your technique is good . You might also want to shoot the partial phases, which inherently image better, with better contrast.

Thanks Neil. I read about your partial phase shots too, will give that a try as well.

Enjoying what this lens can do...

Rick
