"Explain File Sizes Recorded in RAW"

I posted this in the D300 forum and have not had any responses. I shoot w/ a D700 and a D3s and my friend uses the D300s. She sent me a file to process and this is what has piqued my question.

File sizes range in size and I would like to learn how this works.

D300s has 12mg resolution and I get from a 25mg file to a 9 mg file when I examine the properties.

If I open it in Photoshop it may tell me I have a 34mg size file and the same file size is read at 25mg file by Photo Mechanic.

Could someone explain this?

Thx,

Doug

It will avoid duplication if we reply to Doug's other thread here, which has received one reply so far.

Thank you!
