I noticed that no-one discloses their camera's serial numbers. What is the reasoning behind this? Can the serial number be used for anything malicious?

Serial numbers are pretty pointless if you are trying to figure out what camera was produced in what order. Serial numbers vary by market, for one thing.
However, there was a thread a while back in this forum where people were providing all or part of a serial number to seen where their camera stood in the Nikon production sequence. I don't think it was useful for much.
I suppose if someone were really malicious they could figure out how to use a serial number to counterfeit a camera for sale or warranty purposes, or to cover a theaft, but they can grab one from somewhere else anyway.
So, I guess the reason is, why disclose something that doesn't do anybody much good, but could be used for something bad?
