"first outing with my new D800"

Having dropped my D700 last week and having sent it for repair to Nikon UK, not sure if it is repairable, I decided to get either a D600 or D800. Although the D600 was fitting my requirements, I decided in the end to go for the D800 because of the dust|oil issue on the D600. Got the camera yesterday and took it out today. I wanted first to test how useful these 36 megapixels can be if I need to crop. This is an example where I used on purpose a rather short focal and cropped heavily in CS6, not that I plan to do this in the future, but I was amazed by the results. This is shot handheld, and I post the original shot and a crop from the same picture.
D800 24-70 at 70 f5.6 1/250s ISO250
I shot raw 12bit compressed

Welcome to the club!

The cropping aspect is great! it allows you to take a larger photo and snip a smaller one out...

Thank you Cam. In this case (crop of the bird), although I would consider it not really usable, this is almost a 100% crop.
I also tested the low light with shots at ISO6400. Again I am amazed by how noise free the pictures came out.I Post one example, no post-processing ISO6400.

The D800 is indeed an amazing camera. You made the right choice!

Thanks Dave. And I am also impressed by the metering which cope with very difficult light situations I was shooting. Exemple of these planst against an almost completely white sky, the plants seem correctly exposed.
