Cheapest UK price at present is £1880 at Amazon and that's a drop of £500 (approx US$750) in 3.5 months! It's at about what the D700 retailed over it's last 3 years. So, not much latitude I wouldn't have thought. The comment about a D800s was made lightly, but who knows

On December 15th, Nikon admits that the D800/e really won't focus correctly and rather than fixing them will drop the price by $200. On December 16th the D801, featuring better focusing, an integrated rocket blower and an oil squeegee attached to the shutter as the only new features, is announced replacing the D800/e. As a way to make up for other customer service related issues, the rocket blower and squeegee will be offered as retrofit items for all older Nikon DSLRs and only as user installable items. Nikon service centers will not touch them. To further address customer complaints about parts and service, Nikon will announce that is is outsourcing its repair center work to Canon

My contacts have informed me that Nikon has fixed the Focus Issue by upgrading the F mount to "FF" (Fixed Focus), now the lens just fall off when focused on the left. Fixed.

Nope! It is rumored to be a D800h with Expeed 3b processor, faster memory and 8 fps.
ya, in your dreams.
The price is dropping by $200 This is not a rebate but a response to competitors Canon just dropped their price on the 5D3. Nikon is lowering other prices as well. There could be a price war brewing?

Opinion but, the MK3's have been in stock for a while in the ads etc.
The D800 seems to have caught up finally.
Last year Nikon, Canon, Sony decided no more discounts on pro level bodies.
There was no wiggle room and supply versus demand.
Its a good bet that Canon is reducing the price so Nikon will match the move but which brand is tanked with on the shelf, and not enough sell through, a good question.
Video = MK3, and Magic Lantern gets the MK2 up to spec (almost as good as the MK3 out of the box anyway) on HDMI out etc. so it's entirely possible, they overshot indie users looking to upgrade.
The D800 OTOH is unique, and Nikon may well have recouped, and or the gambit for NO discounting, has not worked to anyone's advantage.

Hi PerroneFord
Yep and I was one of them. 10 months later and as expected it is 25% cheaper. It's now, also as I expected, come down to almost the D700 price a year ago If I do decide to buy the missing D400, I shall apply the same logic.
It all depends on budget and how much one really wants one and of course whether it's for amateur or professional use.

Circling back to Howard's OP, Thom has posted a clarification on his advice to wait to purchase a D800/E. He's also posted his end-of-year, just for Nikon predictions of new cameras and lenses, as Richard well knows (sorry for the duplication, Richard).
Al posted Thom's predictions as soon as they came out here for discussion

<<I'm only in the market for lenses.>>
Me too David. It seems a long time now since I first read on the forums about a new 300mm f4 with VR or a 80-400mm with AF-S. What do we get, a 70-200mm f4 with no tripod mount and a few other exotics. It's enough to make one look elsewhere as I did with my Sigma 50-500mm OS I also think Sigma are capitalizing on the lack of improvements in existing Nikon lens technologies. All power to them if it makes Nikon look again at their current aging range!

I case it helps to make us feel better, let me note that the two Canon 70-200mm f/4 lenses don't have a tripod collar either. At least the new Nikkor offers one as an option...

Yes, but by the time the Nikon price is added on, one may as well buy the f2.8 I guess. I've always thought an f4 at 70-200mm a strange option. I guess some will be tempted by less weight.
