Sorry for your loss, I'd hate to be in your shoes. On the other hand, what a great excuse to jump FF and get a D600 in a couple of months!
Mine is going strong and just passed the 50.000 mark.
Anybody collecting statistics on this model?

The shutter blades are only attached at one end. The other "fastener" isn't broken because there isn't one. Here are a couple of image/diagrams of Nikon shutters. These are from older film cameras, but are similar in design.
