i've got my d7000 couple of days ago.
i was going thru' initial setup now and reading book.
before that i took some shots and now i saw my filename or image number starting from like _DSC6185

i was hoping to start from something like _DSC0001

is there a way to do it or is it something wrong?

Used or refurbished?

Check the actual shutter actuations.

Where did you get this camera from?

If there were test shots or sample shots by a dealer or tire kicker, this would not be an unreasonable number of shutter executions. Remember this camera's mean shutter actuation count should be over 150,000 images before a failure.

You can reset the file name, see the custom menu setting option d8 - File Number Sequence page 218 for resetting the image name number and the options for automatic resetting of the image name number on various actions.

You can reset the shutter actuations, but Nikon may reset upon service or firmware updates.

Shutter actuations are the number of times the shutter curtain has been opened for an exposure, for cleaning, for the use of LiveView or for the shooting of a video.

You will have to obtain an EXIF, Exchangeable image file format, reader to access this data in an unedited Jpeg. With the more advanced EXIF reading program you can also get this information from an unedited RAW image. You want an unedited image because some editing programs and image transfer programs modify this data. This information is a special type of header added to many media files and for images it include a preview jpeg of image which is used by the OS for displaying thumbnails.

Filenames are one thing. You can easily set them to start at 0001.

Shutter actuations are another matter. They're like an odometer. A new camera shouldn't be over 6100.

File names don't necessarily have anything to do with the number of actuations. An underscore is applied at the beginning of the name to images taken using Adobe RGB color space, and in the fourth position for sRGB and NEF files.

The D7000 takes its file number from the highest number on the card and its memory, and it retains that number even if you reformat. I'm guessing that your card was used in another camera before yours. Try this:

* Remove the memory card currently in your D7000, but remember what the file number was. Remove any cards in the other slot, also.
* Put in a new memory card, reset the file numbers and reformat the new card. As you take pictures with that card, the numbers will start with 0001, 0002, etc.
* Remove the new memory card and put in the old one. Presto! The file numbers will start incrementing from the highest number on the old card.

Of course, the file numbers roll over after they reach 9999 regardless of what you do. But they don't have any specific relation to the number of actuations on that camera.

That's probably what happened in your case.
