After eight inches of snow fell today, my dog had a serious case of cabin fever. I let him outside to play, thinking it would also be a good time to test the autofocus speed of the D7100 I'd received a few days earlier.
I must say I was blown away by how well the autofocus worked. It struck me as much better than my aging D300. I also loved the large files and the fine gradations in the snow.
My dog was running full-bore straight at me in most of these, and he's one fast pup! Obviously not all shots were keepers, but I was pleasantly surprised how many were.
Specs: D7100, Nikon 70-300 VR (not the fastest focuser in the world), ISO 800 & 1600, f6.7-8, 1/500 to 1/1500 sec., plus 1.5 exposure, 51-point autofocus.
Postprocessing: curves, tone and smart sharpening adjustments in PhotoShop CS5.

I just took mine out this morning for a little birding and I was pleasantly surprised how well the autofocus worked as well. I briefly owned a D7000, only a couple of months and was very disappointed in the 39 point system. My D300 is also aging plus it is in the shop for the Err problem. The autofocus worked great and able to shoot beyond ISO 400 is a huge plus! Plus the 24mp shows great detail...

What an adorable pup! My pug heritage forbids such activities; I prefer stuffed animal hunting, sunbathing and an occasional swim.
Seriously, I (as is everyone, it seems) am impressed with the speed and accuracy of the D7100 auto focus system - I never expected it to be this good. Hi ISO noise seems to be on a level about that of the D600, maybe minimally coarser, but not as low as that of the D800 (yes, I own all three, but that's a story for another day). From what I can see here, noise level is extremely low.

Nice shots Scott. I'm finding the speed, lock and accuracy better than my D300 with all lenses (and TC combinations). However, for some reason it isn't quite as quick as my D300s with my 300 f2.8 VR. Neither my 300 f2.8 VR nor my 500 f4 AF-S needed fine tuning, bare and with the TC-14E and TC-17E. I was very pleased with this.

I have a AF-S II 500mm f/4 and on the D7100 I've had no problem. It works fine with 1.4, 1.7 and 2.0 (III) TC's. The 1.4 and 1.7 seem to have little loss of quality, the 2.0, is well its the 2.0. Its ok, but not crisp. However the focus works about the same on all of them in the centre spot.(using single point focus), and the 1.4 and 1.7 seem fine when I move the point about to get a birds eye as the focus point. The 2.0 is adequate.
