It seems like MOST of my shots with the 24-70 are plenty sharp at 70mm, but really soft from 50mm down to 24mm. I don't know if the problem is the lens, or the focus points on the camera. On all shots, the focus point was squarely over the left eye. These are all straight out of the camera...conversion to JPEG only.
