"DNG Conversion from NEFs"

Buffalo, US

Hi there,

I recently went from JPEGs to shooting RAW images with a Nikon D80, so I have been converting the NEF files to DNG files right after they arrive in Lighroom 2.6.

My JPEGs always showed up as thumbnails (and still do) in 'My Pictures' on my HD, and NEFs would also be thumbnails (at least I think so) of the images--but NOT the dng files that have a blue/orange pattern that conceals what they are--and this is a problem, especially if I have to reconnect those occasional, pesky
"?s".

I might be doing something wrong--or is this the way it is supposed to be--no thumbnails for dng files? Any suggestions? Thank you.

What OS/version? If you are on 32bit vista (and I think 32bit win7 too) this should work. There is not a version for 64bit windows, though.

Hi,

OS is Win 7 Ultimate (we get it where I teach for $19.95), on a (as far as I know) 32 bit platform (?). I should add that many (even most) images in the folders I am calling on are thumbnail views--but there are a lot of these 2-color jackets over the images. Computer is a laptop; 2.5 year old Toshiba.

Thanks.

So you are getting thumbnails on some DNG's but not others? (I'm on win7 x64 and I only have a few DNGs, but I get thumbnails on none of them). If you are not getting thumbnails on any of the DNGs you can try the CODEC, if on some but not others I don't know.

This is a tough question since it depends on the version of your operating system and whether you are running 32 or 36 bits.

I have been a Codec by Ardfry which creates thumbs for DNG (and NEF on 64 bit machines -- which I believe has not been released yet by Nikon).

Here is the website http://www.ardfry.com/Products.htm

Looks like they also just published a codec for Photoshop.

Bob,

Thanks for the tip. Charlie (above) sent on the DNG Codec from Adobe Labs and that worked--and it has the edge in being free.

I said "Charlie (above) sent..." and I meant it. Mine was the original post, and Charlie was the first to respond to it and he sent the Adobe Codec then. LOOK ABOVE, at the post that says # 1 (yours is # 6) and click on the three letter word T.R.Y. that is in gold--that will bring you straight to the Adobe Lab in 3-4 seconds; then download the DNG Codec, and...WOW!

Bob,

My mistake! The link is not found by keying "TRY"; I meant to write THIS (which is in gold).

Sorry
