Great pictures , But the two with the sun in the picture.

How do you take such pictures without burning the sensor out.

I know looking into the sun will damage you eyes if you could. Every time I look into the sun (by accident) it brings on a sneezing fit.

I know. Not good for your sensor (and eyes) to shoot the sun.

But actually I'm not shooting directly to the sun but to the side.

I've already use the camera again after this so the sensor is okay.

You're not going to "burn out the sensor" by shooting an image of the sun. If you shot the sun and left the shutter open for 10 minutes (some longer exposure anyway) it might do some harm.

The sensor is only exposed for a small fraction of a second - 1/800th and 1/2500th in the case of these two sunset images. Such a short exposure isn't going to harm a camera.


What could damage the sensor is using Live View with the sun (or other very strong light source) in the scene. Nikon actually warns against this on page 105 of the D5100 manual.

I practically don't use Live View (unless of course when shooting movie), so one less thing to take care about.

I have a 3000 so it doesn't have live view. What is it anyway. Is that where you would use the LCD image on the LCD display in some camera's to focus the image?

I have a long, long way to go in photography.
I'm just a curious noobie (not even a year with DSLR - though I bought and still have it an Olympus OM10 - film camera - when I was living in Los Angeles back in 1991).

But you also gotta see good things about what you're doing.

Would a polarizing filter cut out or reduce the glare from the sunlight on water?

You can check the EXIF info for all the pics.
Just click on the image and look for Show EXIF info button on the Gallery. Click there and you can check everything.
I used manual mostly.
Wanted a large depth of field so I used small apertures (high f/stop number).

Nice shots. I llive near the ocean/bay and do a lot of sunset work too. In fact, my favorite shooting is sunset over the bay. If it was going to burn out the sensor on my camera, well , it would have done so by now. My eyes are a different story, I cannot handle shooting the sun with anything more than the 55 setting on the 55-300 or it will immediately hurt my eyes. I did one or two shots like this with the bg sun and won't do it again.
