Will the focus motor on this lens work with my D5100?
Thanks - Joe Rivlin

Hi Joe,

Yes, the Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G AF-S DX is fully compatible with the D5100 including AF.
Good Luck and Enjoy your Nikons!

Best Regards,
Marty

To expand on Marty's answer, all AF-S lenses will autofocus on the D5100 and the D3100.

The "S" in AF-S means that it has Nikon's Silent Wave Motor which is needed for the autofocus system to work with those cameras.

Just Purchased This lens last week.
I've tried it out seems to have worked just fine, on my D3000.

It is a great "prime lens" choice for low light portrait work......very sharp results.

I purchased this lens just over a week ago to put on my D5100. I'm certainly not disappointed with my purchase.

Great lens, I bought it and love it on my D3100! Although I wish my 50 1.8D would auto focus on my D3100

Hi Oscar,

Welcome to Nikonians!
Have you considered adding the 50mm f/1.8G AF-S to your kit?
Good Luck and Enjoy your Nikons!

Best Regards,
Marty

I too am very pleased with this lens which I use on D3100. It seems like I am bouncing back and forth between this 35mm and the longer zoom while the standard kit lens is used less frequently. As an added bonus I just realized my 52mm filters work with it as well.

These appear a bit "soft".......my 35mm is tack sharp. (or did you do some PP?

My 35mm is also tack sharp with a D5100, but I don't use it for close ups. The other day I had a wander around my village using my D5100 with a Sigma 10-20mm wide-angle zoom. The results aren't that great. I originally bought the lens to fit to a D200 which I no longer have. I had no problems with the D200. What's going on?

No Photoshop.
I went as close up as possible, adjusted camera so I had the out of focus background, exactly as I intended made it look almost like a Macro lens.

Plus double click on each to see the full size version The are focused so close you can actually see rain drops from the rain we had the nigh before,

I'm familiar with a Macro lens, because I have one that fits on my two 35mm Chinnon Film cameras. Shame I can't use the lens on the Nikon (they use screw thread and you manually adjust everything.)
