I've got my D3000 for 2 months now; I've noticed that image quality is not that good in terms of contrast, sharpness and colour. I compared those images I captured with my friend’s camera (canon). With his camera, images are so dynamic and lively.
Will it depend on the lens or settings of the camera? Guys please help me enhance my camera settings.

Welcome to Nikonians! I think the difference you are seeing has more to do with the picture controls than anything else. What exposure modes are you using. The Vari-Program modes adust the picture controls to best fit the scene. In Auto mode I am not sure what happens to the picture controls but they are likely controlled by the camera.
If you are using P,S,A, or M exposure modes you can control the Picture Controls in the camera menu. If you set the Picture Control to Vivid the colors will be dynamic and lively which is great for images with brigt primary colors but not as well suited for skin tones. See page 87-90 in the Nikon D3000 Users Manual . Good Luck and Enjoy your Nikons!

Not to be too offensive, but it also has a lot to do with how the camera is used. Getting proper exposure, shooting the right scenes, having good support and/or hand-holding technique all contribute to color, contrast and especially sharpness.
