Just got my D5100 for Christmas. I have been reviewing the tutorial videos on lynda.com (Chapter 3, Session 2) for this camera. I noticed that they show the exposure compensation indicator on the LCD should move right/left when you move the command dial left/right while depressing the exposure compensation button.
When I perform the same steps my exposure compensation indicator flashes and the bars under the line stay the same. I also changed the exposure compensation via the menu route. The value never changes on the indicator.
Any suggestions? I've reviewed the reference manual on exposure compensation.

The little +/- box at the bottom of the LCD display should change. The meter bar will move as well unless you are trying to change the compensation in poor light. In that case the meter bar will not change and the exposure values above the line will blink and you will get a message at the top saying "Subject is too dark". But the box at the bottom will still change. Is that what you see?
