"Lens dilemma" Tue 04-Dec-12 02:05 AM by Mario GTI

Hello Everyone, I'm looking to spend around $500 or less for some nice glass for my D5100. I'm gonna use it mostly for portrait photography and maybe macro. Currently I'm looking into Sigma 18-250mm f3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM and Nikkor 50mm f1.4G which will give me about 75mm in DX format, not bad for portrait. Of course the Sigma will give me more versatility, but I also have my 18-55mm VR kit lens for general shooting. Does anyone have any experience with those two lenses on D5100 body? Thanks in advance,
You probably didn't get any responses to your initial post because few people would have had experience with those two lenses on your camera. I'm confident you will be happy with your new 50. Nice lens at a good price!
Welcome to Nikonians! If you are looking for both a portrait lens and a macro lens, I would recommend the Nikkor 60mm f/2.8G ED AF-S Micro though it is about $50.00 over your $500.00 budget.
Since you already purchased the 50mm f/1.8G AF-S you could add the Nikkor 40mm f/2.8G AF-S DX Micro ($276.95) and be just under your $500.00 budget. Good Luck and Enjoy your Nikons!
Hi Marty, Thanks for your suggestion on the 60mm f/2.8G ED AF-S Micro, I will definitely consider that lens or maybe the cheaper 40mm. My 50mm f/1.8G arrives tomorrow.....can't wait. I will post some pix soon
