How many frames should I be able to achieve on continuous burst shutter mode?
I have my camera set to large fine image size and using a Sandisk 8GB 30mb/s SD card.
On continuous burst I am getting 4 frames before the shutter delays waiting for the buffer to 'catch up'. Is this normal as when I had a D50 I could fire away and achieve significantly mors frame before buffer lag.
really appreciate any comments/advice as it is extremely frustrating.

How many photos does the camera say the buffer should hold when you half press the shutter release? That's the r number you see in the viewfinder.

Hi Malcolm,

With the IQ set to Jpeg Large Fine the buffer capacity is a maximum of 63 images. The maximum number drops if the ISO is set to Hi 0.3 or higher, High ISO NR is on when the ISO is 800 or higher, or Long Exposure Noise Reduction or Auto Distortion Control is On.
If the IQ is set to NEF + Jpeg fine Large the maximum buffer capacity is 7 images with the same restrictions as above.
It sounds like you may be shooting Raw + Jpeg.

Are you using the Built in Speedlight by any chance?
Is Bracketing turned On?

Make sure your active D lighting and noise reduction are both off. Also when shooting sport I turn off the image review.
I found all these little things helped on my D3000.

Many thanks to everyone who responded..
I went on the good old internet and got some advice.
A guy was having the same problem as me and to sort it I switched off Auto Distortion Control and I am now shooting 20+ frames before the buffer starts playing catch up.

Thanks again for your replies and help.

Perhaps this will help other shooters who have this problem - after all this is what Nikonians is about yeah?
