Lens extenders and extension tubes do not have integrated motors. They are merely pass through interconnects to lenses that do. While I understand the intent in including these devices in the list it makes the heading incorrect.
Gerold's list is more correct in that it only includes lenses with motors. It is also a living list with new lenses being added all the time. Adding the comment ... to be continued ... affirms that.

>Why is my ED 80-400mm VR f/4.5-5.6D Nikkor lens no longer on >any compatible list? It works fine on my D200 but not on my >D5100.
There are many more camera bodies where the AF 80-400mm lens is 100% compatible then those that are not.
Nikon used two different types of auto focus motors, one built into the camera body that drives the auto focus mechanism in the older AF lenses and the newer AF-S lenses where the AF motor is in the lens and receives auto focus info from the body to the lens via the body/lens contacts.
The D200 can autofocus both the old and the new types of auto focus lenses. Nikon has eliminated the AF motor in the body of the newer D3000, D5000, D40 and D60 series of bodies. The AF 80-400mm must have the old AF motor in the camera body in order to autofocus. However the AF 80-400mm lens is compatible with all of Nikon DSLR bodies with the exception of auto focus. You can still manual focus the lens. If you want the AF 80-400mm lens to autofocus you should have the D7000 and not the D5100 body.

I see the AF-S 55-300 mm f4.5-5.6G ED VR is on the list for the D3100. However when I put the lens on my camera I received a "lens not attached" message. Looking closer the 55-300 does not have the small target ball on the periphery of the mount face (which I presume the camera body using to idenitfy that a lens is in place).
Based on the compatibility charts (from Nikon too) I assumed this lens would work on my D3100 with AF. Any help? Am I doing something wrong or do I have an old lens or something?

So I have an old Sigma 28-80mm standard AF lense.. I cannot for the life of me find this specific lense anywhere on any site. I have scoured the internet. I keep seeing the 24-70mm but not this one... I am about to purchase a D5100 (YAYYY, FINALLY!) and need to know if the lenses I have are compatible. IS THIS ONE JUST NOT COMPATIBLE WITH THE D5100??!! I'm dying to know. I can't find a yes or a no anywhere and really need to know before I purchase. Any info would be soooo appreciated! Thanks in advance to anybody that can help me!

Welcome to Nikonians! I assume your Sigma 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6 Macro with a Nikon F mount. While it will mount and meter on a D5100, since it has a screwdriver type AF mechanism it will Not AF when mounted on a D5100. The D40, D40X, D60, D3000, D3100, D3200, D5000, D5100, and D5200 do not have AF motors built into the camera body so they require lenses that have AF motors built into them: Nikon AF-S, Sigma HSM, and Sigma with Built in Motor, etc...
The Sigma 28-80mm was never that great optically to begin with. Add the fact that 28mm is not very wide on a DX body like the D5100 it would make more sense to get the Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S VR DX or one of the other kit lenses. They are all optically excellent. Good Luck and Enjoy your Nikons!

A fellow at a camera store came up with a recommendation that blew me away. Rent before you buy. If they rent specific lenses, do that, and see if you like what you are renting. If not, you're just out the rental fee.
I plan to do the rental thing, if I can.
Does the d5200 get along with the Sigma and Tamron lenses? E.g. autofocus and meter?

Just to let everyone know...I have a D5100 and just purchased the Tokina 11-16mm, f2.8 aspherical AT-X 116 PRO DX II. It is an outstanding lens, very heavy duty (if you like light-weight, plastic feeling lens...this one is NOT for you!) You may need the Nikkor 10-24 which is a great lens. Personally, I use this for Real Estate indoor/outdoor shots to put online. The f2.8 works great in small rooms and low light. The original DX (not the II mod.) did not have the silent auto-focusing motor that the new one has. For $525 at B&H it is a tremendously sharp lens! Thanks, jerry

Thanks for sharing this Jerry, I have a D5100 and would love to get a nice wider angle lens like this one.

You will love it! And the "short range" of 11-16mm that you will keep hearing about probably will come from those who don't use it! With the crop factor of the D5100 that lens is very versatile and useful as you can also get good landscapes and close up with little distortion. Read this when you get a chance, he does some very good reviews and shows no bias for any company. He will also point out the negatives of the lens....which all lens have....and that's what makes a good photographer better...learning to work with what you have. IMHO. jerry

Looks like if the lens is AF you're out of luck with the D5300, the lens has to be AF-S. The S seems to be the key. I'm disappointed in the D5300 since my old D80 autofocuses my AF Nikkor 70-300 just fine but the newer, more expensive, "better" D5300 won't... but then the D80 gave me battery info on both batteries in the grip and the D5300 won't do that either. Manual focus works but booooooo.

Curious, looked this lens up on a few sites, best price comes from B&H (still need to check and see if I'll pay duty to ship to Canada from USA) but for the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 AT-X 116 Pro DX they write:
"NOT recommended for use with "full-frame" FX digital or 35mm film SLR cameras. AF not supported by D40, D60, D3000, D3100, D5000 and D5100 cameras."
Was this a difference between the DX and DX 11?
That warning is not shown on the DX II version which is somewhat more expensive.
