I'm looking to buy this lens and noticed the diameter seems rather large. Just curious if it would interfer with the auto focus assist light or create a shadow with the built in flash?

Hi Wayne,
From page 197 of the D5000 Users Manual: At ranges under 1 m (3 ft. 3 in.), the following lenses may block the AF-assist illuminator and interfere with autofocus when lighting is poor: Nikkor 17-55mm f/2.8, 28-70mm f/2.8, and 24-70mm f/2.8 and the Sigma is similar in size. Checking page 196 for lenses that create a shadow with the built in Speedlight there will be a shadow at some of the wider focal lengths. Good Luck and Enjoy your Nikons!

Probably this is not a big deal with the AF assist light - I have the similarly sized D100 and Nikkor 24-70/f2.8 AFS, and even with the built-in AF assist it's not really an issue. However, it does cast a rather large shadow from the built-in flash, especially with the hood. I regard this size lens as completely unusable with the built-in flash.
With an external speedlight (eg SB-600) this is not a problem at all.
