I have 2 16 gb which were working just fine. My mac is reading the cards, no problem. I install either card in my D300 or D700, it thinks, then throws up the E

card 1 - SanDisk Extreme III 30mb 16 gb
card 2 - SanDisk Extreme 60mb/s UDMA 16 gb

Both cameras have no problem reading smaller cards.

Tried reformatting on Mac, no change.

I did a search here, but couldn't find any references.

could it be a sudden firmware update thing? (I had both cameras' updated about a year ago.

I'd appreciate any help. I'm supposed to shoot an event tomorrow, I might just have to minimize my number of shots!nb

Both cards were happily formatted and working properly in both cameras. It puzzles the #### out of my why they would suddenly stop working.

Hi Ken,

Formatting the cards in the camera (and ONLY in the camera) is a good habit. If you format the cards in Mac or PC, you might experience some problems. Formatting the card in a computer can be tricky, since different operating systems perform formatting slightly differently.

In addition Mac writes some hidden files to the card after formatting. It also writes these files even when you just insert the card into the Mac computer.

When you format the card in the camera, the formatting is always the same and in addition the camera creates some directories for files and an index file. To be precise, the camera not only formats the card, it also prepares it for shooting.

Therefore I always follow some strict but easy rules: copy the files to computer, make a separate backup, and format the card in the camera. It always worked till now in it never failed.

Thanks for the replies. I always format on a regular basis using the camera. I only erased one on the mac simply to test it, since the camera was refusing to mount the card. For some reason, the d300 and d700 both decided to no longer honor my 2 16 gb cards.

My 700 had no problem with an extreme 4gb card all day today.

Based upon what Niko said, why don't you try doing a quick format of each on a PC and if that doesn't work try a low level format on a PC. Of couse, then format it again in your camera.

I had a similar incident with a flash drive with my relatively new iMAC so I did a quick format with my PC and I was back in business.

I just wanted to suggest the same procedure.
I already made a Quick Format on a PC and then a regular format in a camera and it always worked, on both D200 and D700.

PC still produces a cleaner format than Mac and does not write any additional files to the card after formatting. Be sure to select FAT32 format, which D700 recognises.
