Every place i tried on the net has them on Back Order with no delivery date. Tried ebay but those crazy people are asking way to much money to open the bids.

I had the same problem. I found one at Samy's Camera a few weeks ago for the new reduced price of $2199.99. I just checked and they have 4 left as of now 5-12-12 3pm EST.

I think what's happened is that e-bay sales of D700's went manic when the D800 was launched with prices to reflect the popularity of the D700. Most of the prices on e-bay that the D700 sold for were frankly a bit ridiculous, considering 2-3 year old bodies were going for not a lot less than a new one!
Now the D700 (in the UK) has been discounted and those who held off e-bay are now buying new and thus getting a two year warranty. As in the US stocks are all on back order due to this demand. It's certainly a current camera on Nikon EU/UK, as is interestingly the D90!
Reading some reports and I say only some, I wonder how many of those who rushed to pre-order the D800 and sold their D700, now may be thinking if it was such a great idea

This is the rule of wing walking as well. Don't let go of what you've got until you've got hold of something else!
The morning after D800s started being delivered (with all the humorous "box openings") I checked out both of my D700 cameras and both were still making the amazing images they did the day before! And BTW, I sold my D200 about two months after my first D700 arrived and was thoroughly wrung out.
