I just took the plunge and ordered a D700. Amazon has about 10 of them in stock directly from Amazon, not some of the other vendors they sell through. I've been pondering on purchasing one of these for some time. I have a couple of wedding to do this summer, so this will be great. I'll be able to use the power grip from my D300. Speaking of the D300. I'm not sure if I'll use it as a spare or sell it. Eventually I'm going to have to change to FX lenses. With the rumor of a D600 on the horizon, it may be worth selling a couple of my lenses like the 17-55 DX. Anyhow, I should have the D700 tomorrow.

Brilliant and you'll have no regrets whatsoever. What amazes me is when one looks at the Amazon UK price, it is some cases only £150-200 more than used copies I've seen on a certain auction site with up to 100K shutter actuations, but you get a full guarantee! That said, the resale values of the D700 reflects that in my and other opinion it's quality is now a legend.

I was lucky, my order was $2199, there were 10 left and now they are sold out straight from Amazon. I usually purchase from B&H but they have been on backorder there for months. One of the 3rd party vendors on Amazon is selling them for $2,499. I see them used for upwards of $2300. Used ones should never cost more than new but there's a shortage and resellers are taaking advantage of it. Next on my list is a Nikkor 24-70 2.8. I may sell my 17-55 2.8 to get it. Don't tell my wife.

No I won't tell your wife. I keep some Nikon secrets too, but it's preferable to having a secret woman....I think I have the 24-70mm and linked to the D700 it is a perfect match as is the 70-200mm.
Enjoy and let us all know how your journey with the D700 progresses. Good luck

This is one of the blessings of Nikon vs. Cannon: no conspicuous white lenses, so unless the wife is very detail oriented, they all look more or less the same! So long as the box doesn't appear, you can try the "... no, that lens is about 3 years old..." explanation! I am blessed. My then fiance bought me my first DSLR -- a D100 -- for a homecoming present when I return from Iraq in 2003 and enjoys my joy with each piece of Nikon equipment I acquire. I limit my lenses though, and don't push my good fortune!
