"Updating D700 Firmware A 1.02 B 1.02 by first time updater"
Wed 20-Jun-12 02:28 AM by Robert44

Toronto, CA

Hi all - My D700 has firmware version A:1.02/B:1.02 and I would like to update it to the current firmware version, A:1.03/B:1.02.

Unfortunately, I have never done it before and I am mindful of the following comment on Nikon's site, "Please read the instructions carefully as firmware updates are permanent and cannot be 'undone' outside of the service department."

After I format the memory card and access it via a compact card reader linked to my computer I see the following two items:
1. a folder whose name is "DCIM"; and
2. a file whose name is "NIKON001.DSC".

It is the following instruction from Nikon that I am not certain about:
"4. Copy the D7000103.BIN file to the top level of the card the downloaded firmware .BIN file"

As I understand it, after I complete the copy, then in the memory card I should see the following (see the attachment "Memory card after updated with firmware update software"):
1. a folder whose name is "DCIM"; and
2. a file whose name is "NIKON001.DSC".
3. a file whose name is "D700_0103.bin"

I feel a little silly about asking this question, but given Nikon's caution quoted above I really do not want to "muck" this up.

Can someone please either confirm that my understanding laid out above is correct or provide me with the correct guidance?

Thanks very much.

P.S. I am running Windows 7 Home Premium, 32 bit.

Robert

Make sure you have a full battery in your camera...then...

This is how I do it.

1. Download new update to my desktop. Creat a new folder on my desktop

3. Drag new update file to new folder

4. Click on new update file...select RUN option.

5. Open the new "D700 Update" folder generated by the RUN option.

6. Drag Bin file to CF card. (not into any folder on card)

7. Put card camera. Turn camera on.

8. Press Menu...select SETUP menu.

9. Press multi-selector "up" one time. (Takes you to the bottom of the Setup Menu.)

10. Firmware Version will appear...press the multi-selector to the right one time.

11. Old and new versions of firmware are displayed. 1.03 should be visible.

12. Press up on multi-selector to choose update.

13. Press OK...and wait. Do not turn your camera off.

And, step by step, that's it. Hope this helps.
