Just bought an "new" D700 (8000 clicks).
Now, the learning process begins. Will order the "mastering.." book, the grip and... NAS striking again.

Mines 3 years old with 17,000 actuations, oh dear I only have 133,000 left according to the spec! I recommend you buy Darrell Young and James Johnson. Enjoy your camera, one purchase you will never regret.

You won't regret buying the grip either as I find it balances the camera very well with both long and heavy lenses.

I haven't seen the Nikonians strap...but, if you're really looking to move up in straps, consider sling straps...no comparison between the ones that arrive on the camera and something like the Black Rapids RS-7 that I now have on my D700. I will never go back to the standard camera straps.

Ever done something and then wondered why you didn't do it sooner...that's the way that I feel about sling straps.

But, that's just me...

Congrats!! I just ordered a new one from Adorama. Decided against the 800 for now, gonna let the market settle and any bugs worked out plus saved almost a grand. Ill get my feet wet in the FF world with the 700 anxious to see how it compares to my D7000 which has been a great little clik box!

I have Black Rapid Sport strap. Love it! I will not be going back to the "regular" strap.

Congrats on the new D700. I bought mine in June 2009 and have racked up close to 90,000 shutter actuations shooting mostly sports events. This camera is without doubt the best photography investment I have ever made. I recommend the Nikonians Pro Sling Strap or the OP/Tech equivalent.

With all of the equipment listed in your profile I find it difficult to believe that you have classified yourself as a Beginner - Just starting!

20+ years ago i used to shoot film a lot, but then my house was robbered and the only thing they took was my photo equipment (a lot). By that time i quit photo hobby,... just started 2 years ago with my D90 and, from that point, been suffering from NAS, and trying to recovery some of the stuff i used to have.
This became my full time hobby, and the more i read/study the more i realise that i'm a really beginner.

Hi Nikonians,

Just finished "RTFM" from D700,... to got one conclusion - I'll have to read it again!!!
While waiting for the "Mastering D700" to arrive, been playing around with the, new to me, D700. Though there are a lot of things pretty similar to the D90 menus, there's a LOT of new things to work with.
This camera rock's!!! Loving it so far.

My suggestion: Get rid of some of your DX stuff an acquire a 14-24/2.8. This lens was the reason why I changed to FX.

Thank you for the suggestion. Actually, that lens is on my wish list. But first i think i'll get the 70-200. Concerning selling my DX stuff, i think that is not an option, cause my GF is already looking into it, and i'll keep my D90 as backup/lightweight body.

Great choice. I got mine a couple of months ago when I booked my first few weddings. ( first is tomorrow!! Yikes.)
Love using it but with the 70-200 lens it's a heavy baby to carry around all day : ))

Try a sling strap...that's why I bought one...it's the difference between night and day. I carry my D700 with a 24-70 mounted for up to 10 hours a day...it's a must...just let your camera rest on your hip and let your cross shoulder mount carry the weight. Not to mention that it's in the perpositionstion for a quick grab and shoot.

I use a Sun sniper strap, same thing as a Black Rapid I suppose. Never mind the 70-200 being heavy, I carry a 50-500mm with this strap and hardly notice the load. I've also done a a few weddings with the Sun Sniper and a D700 with a 24-70 and or 70-200 and it's worth it's weight in gold.

I know Adorama do them in the US

My Nikonians Pro Strap arrived today (together with the Mastering Nikon D700 book, the MB-D10 grip and the Kirk L-Bracket).
I might try it with the Black Rapid RS-5 to see if it works.

I used that combo a couple of weekends ago shooting a horse show - three performances over two days and around 1000 shots. The D700, MB-D10, and 70-200 f2.8 make a heavy package and everything had to be done handheld. Some of the time I also had an SB-910 on top of it all. My Blackrapid Sport strap made all the difference in avoiding muscle soreness by not having it all hanging around my neck when not shooting. I was tired all over but not painfully sore because the camera could hang by my side like a shoulder bag when not in use.

Don't get carried away! I had the 14-24mm and yes it is a lens beyond description! However, it is very specialist in some ways. It is extremely heavy and on FX at times I found it too wide, if too wide can be a problem. It was for me as I like to use ND multi stop filters. Option would be to buy the ubber expensive Lee adaptor kit and filters. I used my 14-24 handheld, but mostly on a tripod. The bulbous front optic is scary and demands utmost care. A few months ago I sold it and bought the 16-35mm f4, a decision I have not regretted. VR is a bonus too. Along with my 24-70 f2.8 it is a great combination. It also works well on my D7000 as a 24-52mm.

Take care, as this lens may have limited appeal and flexibility. It remains a Nikon icon and always will be.

Hello, Nikonians!

I too am a new D700 user, and on top of that new to full frame and Nikon! I'm coming over from the land of Pentax, which has some great positives but just was not cutting it for weddings anymore. I'm really looking forward to full frame in low light, with great autofocus!

Forgive my noob question (I'm sure I'll have more), but when you use your black rapid strap, do you attach it to the body or the lens? With a heavy lens like the 70-200, I'd assume hanging all that on your camera body isn't so wise.

Always on the lens with long lenses. Be careful though, if you decide to change a lens while carrying remember the straps attached to the lens as you my drop the body. I have nearly done that

I can second the sentiments. I have both the 16-35 and the 12-24 and the 16 gets 10 times the use. When you want wide though the 14 can not be beat. It's just too heavy and specialized to take on virtually all my airplane rides. A better landscape lens can not be found though.

Guess you mean 14-24? I sold mine as it wouldn't hold filters unless i bought the exorbitently priced Lee filter kit and bought the 16-35mm for use with multi stop ND filters. Also, the 14-24mm scared me with it's protruding front element.

The 14-24 was on the top of my wish list until I went to the camera store and put one on my D700. Very very wide. I'm thinkin I can get by with the 24-70. The only use I would have for the 14-24 would be landscapes when traveling. The words were not out of my mouth when I thought of gettin creative in downtown Chicago. Nas strikes again, jim

Last year with the D700 in mind I started a thread in the Straps Forum,
I was amazed by the response, many very comprehensive replies.

Now I have three extra straps,
A Crumpler Singapore which is excellent with a large outfit and has one hand adjustable sliders and so very easy to change to sling type configuration and very comfortable.

An Optech USA looks like a piece of sponge cut with the kitchen scissors but a brilliant strap has a grippy and cushion effect on the shoulder. I like this one best for ease of use its not at all bulky and the only non Nikon one I have which can be housed easily in any of my bags including the new large Think Tank to leave only the bag strap showing.

A Sun Sniper which went back into its box after a first glance, so big and bulky especially with the extra hardware clip etc didnt think I would ever get on with it as I like to travel light and as unobtrusive as possible.
However I recently became the proud owner of a Nikon 70-200 2.8 VRII so maybe the Sun Sniper will get used attached to the lens socket.

Congrats! I just recently purchased a D700 also. I couldn't be happier. As of now, I just have a 50mm 1.8D. I'm debating if I should purchase 24-70 first or the 16-35. Hopefully not both at the same time.

The 16-35mm is a fantastic lens and if you have a 50mm already I'd get this next over the 24-70mm which would be some crossover to what you already have

Congrats on the D700, I've had mine since 2008 and added a D7000 last year and I think it's the perfect 2 body system for me....

Congrats on your "new" D700 and assorted other toys. As someone else mentioned, it's a beast and there's very little you can't do with it. I use it for weddings and other gigs and it's up to the task for just about anything. Enjoy!

I think you'll love, I bought mine last November in like new condition with just over 3800 exposures on it, it now has 5288 actuations. One of the first things I did was to purchase the MB-D10 grip for it. I haven't shot with my F5 or F4 since, it made me wonder why I hadn't bought one sooner.

The grip MB-D10 was the first thing i bought too. I got used to this grips with my D90, and they never come off, together with the Kirk L-brackets.

I've been considering switching over to FX.

Question...what lenses, specifically would be suited for FX? I've read you should not use a DX lens on an FX body.

Your Nikon 50/1.8 works great with an FX camera. The best mid range zoom lens for FX is the Nikon 24-70/2.8. A less expensive alternative is the Nikon 24-120/4.
