I received my D700 today and after throwing in my EN-EL4 pack from my F6, was off to the races setting it up.
I haven't gone shooting with it yet (I am waiting until closer to dusk), but have tested my 70-200 VR lens on it. As I was expecting, the corners darken quite a bit wide open. You can actually see the effect as you zoom from 70 to 200mm in the viewfinder. I shot RAW + jpg and turned the in-camera vignetting control off to see how bad it is. It is rather bad I have to say. It is too bad as this is one of my favorite lenses.
I plugged the NEF's into Capture NX 2 and used the vignette control in the software to see what I could do at both 70 and 200 mm. The correction worked better on the long end, which is good since this is where I use the lens most.
While the software fix works at least reasonably well, I think I will be using this lens mostly on my D2x instead of the D700.

Nice MX shots! I first used this lens doing that same work, but with a D100. Question is, what aperture are you using? I used to shoot between f4 and f5.6 when shooting MX. My issues are wide open at f2.8. I will attach an unedited jpg or two to show you what I mean.
I usually keep a skylight 1B filter on there. The vignetting is very noticable throughout the zoom range with the filter on; but I see it with or without the filter on the long end.

In all fairness, in both of the shots seen above, the lenses were stopped down to f/5.6. The 70-200 may not be the perfect lens for FX body cameras. But I see no real problems in using it, even wide-open in the future. If I have to do a little PP in Lightroom, so be it.

The shots I posted above are with the 70-200 wide open at f2.8 with the Vignetting control in camera at "normal" It does help quite a bit, but not perfect as I tried these same shots with the setting on "off" and it is much worse. Perhaps with a higher setting with this lens it will be better. You can add to the in-camera setting in Capture NX 2 as well.
Stopping down any lens will help with this issue, which is why the MX shots look a lot cleaner.
If you care to check out the 70-200 on an FX camera, you can see the effects as you zoom in the viewfinder on the ground glass.
This issue is probably driving a re-design on this lens at Nikon.
You can certainly clean most of it up in PP, but that adds time to the workflow, which is disappointing in a $1,600 optic.
I will be playing with the in camera settings a bit more with this combination when I get a chance.
