I've seen some posts here that pics from the D700 require NX2 to be opened. Well, a temporary solution is to download the NX2 60 day trial version until a third party vendor comes out with a patch or an update. I am certain that Adobe is already working on it.
A trial version of Capture NX 2 is included with the camera, so no need to download anything unless you are using someone else's NEFS.
I got NX2 when it came out and I will say that I like it better then NX 1.3 that I had before. I especially like the quick fix function and the ability to zap dust that was missing from the first version.

For Mac users, the guys at Iridient told me that Raw Developer will support the D700 this week. It is not as popular as a lot of the other RAW converters, possibly due to the relatively small (but growing) number of Mac users, but it is an excellent program and well-reviewed. Since it will be supporting the D700 so soon, it may not be a bad idea for Mac users to download a trial version (fully functional but watermarked) and try it out . . .
NX2 also seems to have a much better print engine that works with my Epson photo printer with out errors that forced Capture 1.3x to close every other time I printed a photo. I also like the quick tools in the right window pane. It lets you adjust highlights, shadows, brightness and contrast easily.

I saw a link maybe on this site that led to a script that makes Capture NX1.x think the photos are from a D3 instead of a D700, so that the older software will work on it. I didn't save the link because I have Capture NX2, but it shouldn't be too hard to find.
