I've had my D700 for a couple of years and love it. Up until now I've only really shot indoors and outside during daylight hours. I've seen incredible pics taken at night handheld with the D700. Excuse the basic camera function question, but how how I get to the extreme ISO's to try and play with nighttime photography? After 6400 ISO are the Hi values, but I know effective ISO can be as high as 25,000 or something? I assume I need to be in M or A or S mode to do this?

The setting HiI corresponds to iso 12,800 and HiII is iso 25,600. You can access these in the shooting menu, iso sensitivity setting. However, exposures taken above iso 6400, or preferentially iso 3200 generally show poor IQ. It is much better to use a fast prime lens wide open, at f/1.4 or f/2.

I have done numerous night shots at 6400 ISO and have been very happy with them. I have seen some amazing shots at HI and HII but as Tristan says your IQ goes down, but if it is your only option to get the shot go for it.
