I don't often frequent canonrumors, but found a very fascinating article there.

It's interesting to see the roots of most modern designs. I do wonder why or why not true "ground-up" lens designs have not been attempted or are not attempted very often? Perhaps there is only so many base combinations to start from.

Plenty have been attempted. Few have survived the test of time. In fact, many (I'd guess most) don't even make it past the computer these days.
