I am coordinating a nature photo shoot to Bulls Island, SC on September 20th, 2008. This trip will include a chartered boat to the island prior to sunrise and then ferry service back to the harbor. We can have about 5 to 7 people. We currently have three people attending and would like to have a couple more participants.
Bulls Island is part of the Cape Romain Natural Wildlife Refuge and is very primitive but has some great areas of photography from Boneyard Beach to a Wildlife Viewing Platform in the center of the island. This is one of the few places in the country that is still very primitive; so we will need to be careful of snakes, crocks and alligators. Attached is a brochure of the island for your review and note this will require hiking on the island to get to the different points for the photos; so camera bags that can be backpacked or shoulder mounted are recommended. Also, I would plan on a sturdy set of Tripod legs for the Sunrise shooting. Additional information about the location can be found at http://www.fws.gov/caperomain/bullsisland.html
Below is the rough agenda that should give you an idea of time frame, etc. The date was selected to provide us low tide access during sunrise on Boneyard Beach (really good photography).
September 19th – Friday – Travel to Charleston in the afternoon and grab some evening shots on the battery and historic walk of Charleston. Probably leave mid-afternoon. Will send out potential hotels that we will be staying once we get confirmations.
September 20th – Saturday –
1. 4:15 - 4:30 AM Meet at harbor for charter
2. 5:00 – Arrive at Bulls Island and get orientation talk. (I will have a GPS but we will be provided Hand Held Maps as well)
3. 5:10 – Hike for two miles to Boneyard Beach (Rapid Hike) to catch early light (Sunrise is at 6:07 AM) so we may need to make it a bit earlier.
4. After Sunrise and Beach Shoots - Migrate to the center of the Island for Bird and Wildlife Shooting.
