We have had 18 straight days of rain here in central Ohio so I decided it was time to visit one of my favorite waterfalls. Ash Cave is Ohio's largest recess cave. The horseshoe-shaped cave is massive; measuring 700 feet from end to end, 100 feet deep from the rear cave wall to its front edge with the rim rising 90 feet high. A small creek cascades over the rim into a small plunge pool below. The cave was formed like the others in this region; the middle layer of Blackhand sandstone has been weathered or eroded while the more resistant upper and lower zones have remained intact. Ash Cave is named after the huge pile of ashes found under the shelter by early settlers. The largest pile was recorded as being 100 feet long, 30 feet wide and 3 feet deep. The source of the ashes is unknown but is believed to be from Indian campfires built up over hundreds of years.

Lovely! The last one is my favorite. Just the right amount of smoothing on the water. The lush foreground adds a great deal to the scene.

In Tennessee that type of "cave" is referred to as a "rock house." They are common on the Cumberland Plateau, and I believe your area is on the northern end of that geology.

Great series, Dave. My favorite is the third. Ohio should be using your images for their tourism bureau.

My mom lives in the northwest part of Ohio and every time I plan a visit I think about carving out a few days to head to this area, but it's just too far. One day I'll make it there.

Cheers!

Wonderful Set Dave! Reminds me of a place call Starved Rock here in IL, they are very similar. 3 & 4 are my favorites. Vary nice choice of shutter speed, the water looks very nice. For the most part I just started shooting moving water this year. In the past I never realized how much the speed of the moving water would dictate the choice of ones shutter speed. Thanks for sharing...

Thanks Claudia,
It's not any farther from northwest Ohio than your drive from Salt lake City to Capitol Reef. If you ever do plan a trip to the area, let me know and I'll give you some updates on weather/shooting conditions.

Thanks Scott,
As you are learning, the volume and speed of the water all play a role in choosing the best shutter speed. I don't think there is one "right" speed; each situation is different. Digital makes it much easier to preview results and adjust accordingly.

David,
Thanks for posting these. I always love looking at photographs of Hocking Hills. The last one is my favorite. I love your composition with the green plants in the lower right and the rocks that seem to point to the falls coming out of the lower left. I have only been to Hocking Hills once and that was before I had any interest in photography. A friend of mine told me about a photo contest called "Shoot the Hills". Have you ever entered the competition?
