I love your shoots. I am thinking of getting the 300 F4 how far away were you and did you have to crop???

Thank you Mark. They often use that perch which is in the water about 20' away from a park bench. So they get used to people being around without feeling threatened......Scotty.

Hi Francine,
The shots of the Cormorant & Eurasian Coot were taken from about 20' & 30' respectively. The Cormorant was slightly cropped. The Coot wasn't. Although I should have cropped some of the uninteresting area out in front of the bird.
The Grebe was around 100' away from me & was severely cropped.
The beauty of the 300mm f/4D is that it is a pretty sharp lens to begin with. The D300s extends that to 450mm. Add the 1.4TC & I effectively have a reach of 630mm. You would achieve the same benefit on your D90.
I'm attaching the same photo uncropped for comparison.....Scotty.

Keep up the good work Scotty
Just love the little pied cormorant and coot
Once again perfect focus and DOF

Nice set Scotty. First time I have seen the Little Pied Cormorant.
I guess I'm to far south.

Very nice set Ian - The 300AF-S does an excellent job of rendering detail! I really like the Little Pie Cormorant!

Thanks for replying Rick. I'm not sure of the range of the Little Pied Cormorant. Maybe they don't inhabit the Northern Hemisphere. I'd be interested in finding out......Scotty.

Thanks for looking Al. I'm more than happy with my setup. A 500mm f/4 would make me happier though......Scotty.

Thanks Preston. The Grebe seems to hang around where i've been shooting. If I can get there when the light is right & the dog walkers are absent, he might venture in a bit closer......Scotty.

Thanks David. I can nearly always count on some sort of bird on that perch. I've just got to time it when the light is favorable.....Scotty.
