"SB-28 stuck on my F5"

Burnet, US

Hello all....

Yesterday I went on our local BMW club's drive, and I shot two rolls of film in an old car museum.

When I got home last night the SB-38 would not come off!! It was so incredibly tight.

We tried (and do not squirm) a towel wrapped wrench with very low pressure and it still would not budge.

Now, I have small chubby fingers, and before yesterday, I could never really tighten the lock that good. Thus I have no idea why the thing go so tight....

Any thoughts???

Jussi's recommendation is sound. The same thing has happen to me in this hot weather. Having mounted the SB-28 inside in the air-conditioned environment, after a good day's sun it expands and it is extremely difficult to remove. A good night rest back into the cold is what it takes to remove it.

Have a great time

Okay....

Thanks for the ideas.....I had not considered that....

I did take it in to my local shop, and the guy got it loose. He had nice little thin fingers which helped, but as I had not considered the expansion and contraction, that would indeed make sense....

Thanks again,

I had the same thing happen when I first mounted the SB-28 on my F-100. I did what the manual suggested - pushed the foot forward GENTLY and the wheel loosened. See the bottom of page 14 of the user manual - the last bullet item "Detaching the SB-28".

I had that happen with an SB-26 on an F100 body and found the when problem began you could remove the flash but as I continued to mount the flash it became more difficult to remove it from the camera. If the problem persists, as it did in my case, you may have to take the flash to a repair shop and have them replace the spring and ball that is located in the foot and is used to seat the flash in the hotshoe on the camera's prism. This repair is less than $50.00 and takes about a week. I had this done and had no more trouble with my SB 26. I also own an SB 28 and have never experienced this problem. Good luck.

FYI: All of the newer Nikon cameras have a small hole in the hot shoe that interfaces with a pin in the SB-28 to lock the flash in place. There is no need to overtighten the knob
