"Is is possible..."
Fri 20-Jul-12 01:55 PM by Chetmg

Sorry for the question,

I am starting to get into flash photography a little more than I ever have before. I use a SB-600 and use it remotely. My question is, can I use another SB-600 at the same time remotely? I want to use two (or maybe more) SB-600(s). If I use my built in flash as my command on my D300 will it work? In my mind it would if all of the channels are set the same.

Thanks

You can use multiple iTTL compatible Speedlights, you're not just limited to having to use the same models together (i.e., SB-600 + SB-900). YOu can group them together or separately. Seperately is useful if you're setting them to fire at different power settings for example, so you don't have to group them together unless you want to.

You can do either.

With iTTL:

If you want set the same relative power to all the remotes, you can put them in one group.

If you want different relative power levels set the units in groups by the relative percentage power level. iTTL will set the required levels of power for each group.

In manual:

You set the power level on each remote unit.

Hi Chet,

Yes!
The D300 in Commander mode can control any number of Speedlights in up to two remote Groups.
Good Luck and Enjoy your Nikons!

Best Regards,
Marty

Thank you all very much for the answers. Somewhere I read you had to have an SB-800 or 900 to use multiple speedlights.

Thanks again. This cleared it up. I will pick up another SB-600.

The list of controller Speedlights is now Master/Commander units:

SB-910/900/800/700

Commander only: SU-800. This unit will trigger remote units but will not illuminate the scene. It use IR only light.

The D70/s is a single group commander camera.

Most Nikon dSLRs with a pop-up flash can act as a master/commander for up to 2 grooups of Speedlights.
