ooooo...I suspect this challenge will be large, I know I love to shoot water....this is an early morning shot in Portland Maine's "Old Port", the reflection is the side of a building above the Lobster boat. The old windows were all filled in with a contrasting color brick, and this mornings reflection was so strong it looked like pigment floating on the water....

Here's a night shot, again, Portlands "Old Port", capping off a great day and a fun photo day, I got up at 4:45am, that day and literally shot all day, over 400 shots from one end of town to the other. There's even a narrow gauge train yard/museum at the far end of the harbor that yielded some really interesting compositions. This is one of the fishing piers at around 10pm, when I hit the street that morning at about 5am, these boats were already out to sea.....what a beautiful City...

Depends on what program you use to render the jpeg's on how to accomplish this, I usually use faststone 3.6 (www.faststone.org), and I first resize the image to 800x600 (act. 800x536), then when saving the image as a jpeg, it lets you adjust the quality of the image to affect the file size, so I can still upload a pic that's 800x600 and under 150k., while striking a happy medium between size and quality....I think that's a good size for most monitors to see a good image on. Faststone is a free image editor/organizer, too. Highly recommended, especially for someone who hasn't got one. I have many other editors, (Capture One, Photoshop 7, PaintShop Pro 8,), but faststone is small, quick, and since I use it to organize all my photos anyway, I tend to use it's features for easy edits and batch tools like renaming and resizing.

Below is my first successful waterfall shot. This was my second visit to this location as the first time I went, I had too many issues to count in trying to photograph the falls correctly (just learing how to use the cameras). I'd call it a success. I've returned to the location twice more, once in the fall, and again in the winter, to shoot from different angles, I'll post those when I get an opportunity to upload them.

Lens and Filters: 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AF-S at 42mm
Film and ISO: 200
Aperture: f/14
Shutter speed: 1.3 seconds

I believe I metered off of the "green" as per the instructions from Understanding Exposure. I think he called it "Mr. Green Jeans" or something like that. Also, I may have had a polarizing filter on, I don't recall if at the time when I took this photo if I had it yet, and I only have the EXIF to go off of. Although, judging from the reflections off of the water, I am thinking I didn't have it yet.

This will be my first photo post, so sorry if I get it wrong.

This is the "North Coast", or Lake Erie in Cleveland, Ohio. The water's been frozen for a while, so this was my first chance with my new D60.

I guess if you give exposure info you have to confess photoshopping two photos together. I presently suck at that, too, but I'm working on it!

This reminds me of Fisherman's Wharf from my recent trip to San Francisco. It was 48 degrees there and my wife and I were driving around with the convertible top down. It was -10 in Ohio!

I'm not sure if you meant "sized" when you said cropped, but the picture I just posted above is my first photo post. Your photo could be sized larger so we can see it better (I think). Anyway, I sized my picture by resizing in photoshop making the long side 800 wide, then saved to desktop by changing the jpeg compression to make the photo under 150k. Hope that helps.

Someone else suggested this software for resizing. I downloaded it but haven't tried it yet. It has the advantage of being free!

BTW, my Sigma 10-20 is in the mail, and should be in any day. Gonna have to throw up some more landscapin'! Does Sigma glass qualify as NAS? Seriously can't wait for this lens!

and then change the pixel size to 800?
How do I compressed in Desktop to jpeg?

I have PS CS, and when I save, it asks what type of compression I would like to use (i.e. high quality, good, medium.) In the bottom of this dialogue, it shows the image size. I move the quality slider until the size is under 150k, then save. Don't know if it works like that in PS6, but I would tend to think so. Oh, just noticed you have elements. The save process should be the same, but maybe not. Might wanna try that free software if PS gives you any trouble. I believe the 800 refers to pixels, as in an 800X600 desktop. Make sure that the change is relative, meaning the other dimension also changes when you change that dimension. Can't remember what that's called in the dialogue box. I know that you can also change the resolution, cause computer monitors are like 70 dpi, but I didn't do that cause I got confused. Anyway, you'll figger it out eventually!

Apologies to James23p, we are getting off topic. Just thought I'd help if I could. I suppose that questions about image resizing should be in an appropriate forum, so joeD is now gonna post another image that he spent all day trying to size!

Thank you for the help. I saw that option also. Ihave to resize it first to 800 and then save it for Web feature. Is that correct.
Also there's an option. Baseline, Baseline optimized and Progressive.
Which one do use choose?

You will resize it when you save for web.
You should see a JPEG Medium Quality 30..or whatever it defaults at.
Then you will see an original image size. Under that you can put in a resize that you want. Since these forums have a restriction of 800 wide.. I put in 800xwhatever since I use constrain proportion. That size will vary.
You should see the end result before you save as to how big the file is. Its located just under the picture you are resizing. Its the fastest most reliable way for me to do it... but I think you loose the EXIF info saving to web.

I'm new to Nikonian and love it!
Anyway, I tried faststone out and it works pretty well, but it is still a very basic editing program. However, it resizes pics quickly and easily.

Welcome, welcome!....glad you tried faststone....free, fast, and edits and renders NEF files.....good basic editing features, but an excellent all around program....excels at just basic organizing of all your images......

Dog-gone it!

I went to look at some of my favorite water pictures and realized that when I loaded the images on the new computer, most of the exit information on the shots was lost. I'm not sure that I'll be able to enter anything I shot in 2007 or 2008.

Well, I'm enjoying looking at the photographs other people have made.

Ok, so not all the water is frozen in Connecticut...they were able to find some under the 13.5 inches of ice on Lake Quassapaug for the 7th annual Penguin Plunge. This is a benefit for the Special Olympics, and you've got to make a donation of at least $50 for the privilege of running down the beach and into the frigid water. Air temperature was about 29 degrees....water temperature was about.....well you can guess. Many teams had a theme, some even with plungers in hand, all of them NUTS!! But they raised a lot of money for a good cause, and even though there were Ambulances ready...nobody needed one. It was cold enough standing out there with my trusty D40X for an hour and a half....!

I remember Yellowstone; I was there about 15 years ago. The colors were amazing and the formations had had been created by the spewing, chemical-laden water made much of the area otherworldly.

Nice shot, especially with the snowcapped mountains peeking up in the back.

I tried resizing pjotos in Faststone down to the size I thought was acceptable. About 600x400, when I uploaded it said the file was too big. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I was given the 55-200mm VR lens yesterday as a surprise late-Valentines present. Loaded up the camera, ready to have fun today....it's raining. Oh, well! While I didn't feel like tackling the wind and the cold, my driveway provided the backdrop for some water fun.

Ok...got a picture in, but it looks crappy so small. I think I need to use another program to change quality.

After resizing, and I use (800x600)for posting in the forums, you need to "save as", and then click on the "options" tab, where you'll be able to adjust the image file size/quality to fit within the 150k guidelines, (without altering the physical size of the image). Use the slider to adjust to as close to 150k as possible and the save as a jpeg. Pay attention to where you save it, and be sure you rename it so you don't overwrite the original file...I usually just add "150k" to the end of the name of the image so I can easily recognize that it's the one I used for posting purposes, (like flower150k.jpg)... Hope that helps

see post above.....stick with fasstone...at least to learn it...it is quite powerful and useful...but there is a learning curve (like everything else)...PM me if I can be of more help, as I know it pretty well, and find it a favorite program, even if just for it's organizing and resizing functions, and of course it handles RAW (NEF) files as well....and it's FREE!......oh and here's a tutorial that can help anyone that's stuck...

Very nice. I like the converging ripples from the raindrops. It would be hard to get that shot without rain.

I bought the VR 70-300 for a trip to sunny san francisco that was going to include a whaling adventure, but saw neither sun nor whales, as we got rained out of everything. I sent the 70-300 back upon my return, then realized I couldn't live without it, so reordered it. My 55-200 has been sitting idle since then, and I don't know if I'm going to keep it. Another NAS conundrum!

Thanks for the comments, Beatcat. I tried to use the cloning and healing tools in PS CS4 but couldn't get very good results. When I cropped that side of the picture it didn't look right to me ... probably because I know what the original looks like, I guess.

I also have one of a 4-masted sailing ship with someones hand in the left hand side of the shot. It wasn't a good day

Copenhagen is beautiful, of course. There are more from my trip there in my gallery.

Rotated slightly left, cropped out the distraction, tweaked color, saturation, sharpness, gamma, and contrast, very, very slightly....we're left with a slightly smaller image, and perhaps one without the initial "capture of the moment" feel......but still a pleasing shot for sure.....but composition is in the eye of the photographer, as well as the eye of the one taking it in...so I mean no disrespect, just trying to help.....please let me know if I should just "shut my big yapper"- :-}

I find that it's the beauty of a program like faststone. It is far easier to learn than many much better and more comprehensive editing programs, yet still pretty powerful, and once you do learn the basics, it becomes very fast to use. Of course we'd all like to be PhotoShop genies, and have $700 to spend on an editor.....but.....I stuck with it for a few months and it's very quick to load when needed, (actually I have it set to auto load when I click on an image file), and I find I can get in and out with the results I need 90% of the time, really quickly. All these programs have their idiosyncrasies, and all will give very good results, and all need to be learned, and I apologize for being such a proponent....I do use my other higher end editors quite often too, but I consider this a powertool, and I'm like you....impatient!

Yes, that's a seedpod, but it's not floating. There's not enough water on the driveway for it to float.

I think that I've finally figured out the posting thing using NX2. First, I resize the image so that the longest side is about 800 pixels. Then I reduce the dpi down to about 75. In the final step, I also reduce the quality from "fine" or 99 down to "good" about 59. When I do that, the image comes up on the forum a decent size.

On my old computer, I had Photosuite 4 which did most of the resizing for me. Now I am having to think for myself.

Got the kit 18-55, and the 70-300. Don't think i could live with the hole from 55-200, and couldn't afford to buy without selling. Particularly cuz I just dropped dough on my new Sigma 10-20, which I am very excited about but haven't had much chance to use. Weather is crappy here (Cleveland, Ohio)

Couldn't find the original on the hard drive (it's there somewhere), but this one won me an honorable mention in Lake Erie Living magazine. They didn't give me anything, though!

Eh....out of water? At least it was in water before this. They had a ton of fish that day, on Kettletown Lake, Southbury CT. I got there as they were leaving, went out onto the ice, and snapped a few of thr guys, the fish and the rigs.

I was just there Dec. 12-19, took the drive and couldn't take enough pictures of the Lone Cyprus. Couldn't drink enough wine in Napa Valley, either. We were driving around with the top down on our rental Mustang, people thought we were crazy but it was 48 degrees! Was -19 when we left Ohio. If I'd've seen this picture first I'd've taken it!

Thanks for the comments. I thought I would post a water shot with all the phases present and for the vapor phase I got steam and clouds. It was interesting to learn that many of the orange-ish colors are from heat loving colonies of bacteria.
