You have tried cleaning the camera and lens contacts, tried a different lens but still the “err” message keep flashing.

I just realized I still got this Nikon 5700 inside my dry cabinet so I gave the camera some simple exercise

The gear also serves as a switch to tell the microprocessor the position/status of the mirror and shutter mechanism.
In this camera, there's oil on the switch causing no electrical contact
http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t97/davidhilos/33.jpg

Here's 2 gears, one is good, one is not so good. Guess which one is not so good and why

I was hoping you were going to say turn this knob and push this button at the same time. That looks like some scary stuff, but it is cool! Thanks for the pictures.

The one on the left is the good gear

The metal part is held in place by the 2 plastic "rivets".
They missed to heat up and press one of the rivets on the right gear.
Notice the small round thing at the center
I have seen some cases wherein the metal came off due to this problem

Hi

Thanks for the very informative post.

Several months after converting an old D80 to IR I suddenly got the dreaded "ERR" problem. I've stripped down the camera and found the gear wheel broken! Sourced a new gear from the US (not available in the UK!) and now about to reassemble the lot.

Just the one question, I've read elsewhere that the arrow on the gear wheel should be between the 2 arrows on the black base plate, but there are 2 arrows on the gear wheel! which should I use, or doesn't it matter?

Advice warmly welcomed.

Tony C

Hi,
Where did you get the gear?
Anybody knows where to get one and for how much?
Also, part number information could help a lot.
I got that *$#@%^ err message in my d80.
