"What do you really do?"

CA

I have been on this board for a few years now. It's always interesting to see the personalities behind the alias. What do you really do when you are not a photographer?

Let me start. I work in online marketing.

Difficult question for me this, because I am really a photographer; that's what I do. I take photographs; I sell photographs; I teach other people how to take photographs ( www.painting-photography-france.com )

I also rent out a Gite (holiday home) to tourists.

When I'm NOT working (if you can call it working), I play guitar in a blues band consisting of three English and two French musicians (we're playing the Mirepoix Jazz Festival, Easter 2006)

And when I'm not earning money and having fun with those activities, I'm spending the money I've earned on developing the property here (one of my ongoing projects is creating a purpose-built art/photographic/music studio)

Oh, and I nearly forgot, in the winter, when I'm not building and refurbishing, I teach English to French people.

Hrm. In the air, in my dreams, that would be a nice job for me (I am a pilot, though).

But back on the ground, just a plain old embedded software engineer. I can actually understand the lowlevel stuff going on in the D70, and how all these memory cards work. (I do software, not hardware design, but I know my way around the hardware).

Let's see now...

• I'm retired from my Industrial Design and Computer Graphics business and trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up.

• I still do animation occasionally.

• I volunteer for a local Hospice.

• I am a member of a local non-profit charity.

• I occasionally teach Photoshop and Illustrator to local high school art students.

• I raise Golden Retrievers.

• I play golf...badly.

• And I do A LOT of sports photography!

I'm tired—I think I'll go back to work.....

Boy, do I identify with You! I'm retired from the State of Michigan as a social worker, investigator and program consultant. I have been a semi-pro photographer during my college years and for a year after I retired. I do a lot of volunteering (chairman of credit committee for my credit union) Play TAPS for all the military funerals in the area, not to mention big bands, brass quintet, European travel and photography, and LOTS of local sports photography (I donate the pics to the kids). I'm also threatening to go back to work so I can get some rest! I've worked in large format (4x5 press cameras in the late 50's and 60's, 35mm, medium format, 35mm and now digital (D70). However, I just bought a mint F100 from a member of this forum and I love it. I usually take a roll of B&W at whatever game I'm shooting before I start shooting digital. I still do all my own B&W processing in my darkroom. That's where the fun is for me.
Happy Shooting!

Quispamsis, CA

I retired the end of March 2005. Prior to then I held various jobs in the electronics industry from Ontario to Nova Scotia, Canada. I started work as a TV tech, worked for Motorola for a while, etc. For 8 years I provided technical support/advice and training for 30 technicians and 3 RF design engineers in the cellular/2-way radio/paging/ division of the company. Prior to retiring I took a low pressure desk job and eased painlessly into retirment. Lucky I could do that or I am afraid I would have imploded.

Occasionally I yearn for the 7/24 on call days when I could be planning an event with the family and end up hundreds of miles away on a mountain top sorting out a system failure. To overcome this longing I grab my D70s and shoot a few pictures. Come to think of it I haven't had that feeling in months. Way to go Nikon!!!

Oh yes, I have held ham radio licence VE1FJ for 43 years or so. When I am not taking pictures I can be found building or flying model airplanes. I still play guitar but not as much as I would like. So many things to do and so little time to do them.

Paul...

wow....all you really smart people.

I am a domestic engineer, juvenille coordinator, hospice volunteer, teaching/aid/volunteer, and freelance writer.

In other words I live with 4 teens I have to keep tabs on, argue with, guide, love in spite of themselves, and finance. I help my mom and grandma who have numerous problems and involves me driving 140 miles each week to do this help. I work one day a week at my kids junior high and corral tons of kids all day. I do a little freelance writing on the side for our local weekly paper.

I also occassionally help dh with things as he runs a business in custom computer programming, repairs, you name it. We live in a small town and there is no one to do the repairs, replacements, deliveries so he learned how to do it himself and is degreed and certified in all of it.

All this keeps me too busy to have a real job.

I'm retired now, after a long career as a shooter (photojournalism, glamour, travel). My interests include music, writing and restaurant reviewing. Europe was my home for 16 years (Italy, Spain and the UK).

These days, I'm working part time as a copy editor at a magazine here in NYC.

The move from film to digital has been much harder than I imagined it would be. I take two or three trips a year now, and not having to deal with film anymore is . . . wonderful.

Really interesting thread. Fun Read. Thanks!!

Ex-Controller/CFO type, more with an emphasis on systems than the financial side of the job.

Also currently older than dirt AND running water.

Started side photo biz doing local sports groups, dance teams, niche schools, 2nd camera at weddings, (all film) before a major change in my life around 2003 that now has me living overseas 10 months of the year in a very small middle east country. Little photo op so I consult for 2 "accounting" clients in the states via the internet with periodic visits back to green terra firma.

Digital has me banging my head against the wall, but I'm "gonna get it" as they say.

Got tired of adjusting everything with my old D1 and went with the D70s.

I'm a clinical pharmacist working for the government. It's a teaching hospital so I get the pleasure of helping the new residents/interns/students with mostly calculations of doses and which drugs may be more appropriate.

Im also a Navy Officer ... I left active duty after 13 years and finishing with the Reserves.

I'm an artist .... when I'm not painting or drawing...I'm shooting a lot of film .... I still shoot film .. it's so hard to put down ... but, I really got hooked on digital when I purchased the D70..it's so easy to use ...

I am a Firefighter, a Paramedic, and a Police Officer.

I have seen human beings reach the pinnacles of sacrifice and compassion, occasionally.
I have seen people in the depths of despair so deep, they don't cry, or make a sound.
I have placed my mouth on the mouth of a child not breathing, and felt his breathing begin again.
I have worked on my hands and knees, with no visibility, in unbelievable heat, and been lost, hoping they would find me. (They did).
I have delivered 12 babies with my own hands. My teachers said I wouldn't amount to nothing.
I have loved every single minute of it (except maybe the lost part, truth be told), and thank God every day that he let me.
And I take pictures. How could you not?

Its a blast to see the diversity in our lives and professions all brought together by a common passion.

I work for an international film company (their logo is green & red and make a camera found elsewhere in these forums). I design and implement high-end, fault tolerant, high-availability digital imaging systems for hospital radiology departments (aka PACS). I recently started managing the Western US for our group of Engineers.

Ive been playing in digital imaging & photography for as long as I can remember.

I'm a technology deployment/implemenation supervisor for a medium size and growing north east bank (ever seen the big red "C"?). I basically over see the deployment of all technology including servers, pcs, and data equipment to new branches and training sites throughout our footprint. Also recently married, and suffering major NAS without the money to support it!!

Great thread, interesting to see how the majority of posters work in some technology field, or are pro photogs.

I learned on film, and am now relearning with my D70...and loving every second of it.

Interesting thread -- thanks for starting it.

I manage digital audio R&D for a large semiconductor company. My group develops algorithms and software for chips in MP3 players and similar devices, and a sister group does the same for digital cameras.

My thesis was on image deblurring, and I started processing digital images in 1970, working with 256x256 8-bit monochrome images. It took 20 minutes on a mainframe (DEC PDP-10) to process a single image. We've come a long way...

Hi, was browsing thru the forum and just had to answer this post. I'm a designer in the Aerospace industry working mainly on gas turbine engine components. I utilize UG, a solid modeling software most of the day when I'm not doing administrative type work. I have to say I really enjoy my job. My hobbies include, obviously, photography and I also enjoy music and hiking as well as biking.

I retired from my own import/export company at 43 when my husband had a heart transplant.

Now we live in a 1100 square feet house twelve miles (back road) from Yosemite. I spent most of my days chasing my dogs and chasing myself. I also weave on floor loom and tapestry loom and paint a little.

What a great thread! My oldest son used to laugh at me when I would always ask what his friend's dads do for a living. Now he's out on his own and I believe I heard him ask someone just the other day...

For me, I'm president of a company that provides payment managment solutions for orthodontists, dentists, OB/GYNs, private schools, and other business that setup recurring payment plans and need someone to manage them professionally.

One day I'll have more time for this great hobby that brings us together. For now the wife and I manage (professionally, of course) our 3 remaining kids and her 2 parents.

Wow, almost missed this thread.. Been catching up on things here a bit, but, being retired, it's hard to find the time!

Anyway, retired Installer, Systems Analyst in Telecom, wired, wireless, radio, the whole she-bang in my 39 years.. A Bell survivor, I guess.. Western Electric, AT&T, Lucent and out.. Semi-voluntarily.. It was time..

Now it's time to rediscover photography, so a D70, plus a variety of lens, and such stuff..

Currently trying to pin down an 18-200mm VRII.. Need it for a trip to Spain in May, so hopefully the supplies come through..
