"Used D80 18-55 lens not foucusing"

I am having trouble with my d80 foucusing on non close-up subjects.
I have taken pictures of flowers and it's fine but at 55mm or on normal shots they are blurry. The photo fo my neice in a costume was bad indoors with built in flash. I haved different af settings.
Is it me or the camers?

I went back to the dealer and they gave another lens that seems better. The center was good but the outside was out of focus.

That sounds like a very badly defective sample. If one side is out of focus, it's a big clue that one (or I suppose, more than one) element is decentered. And if you can SEE it, it's really decentered. As in dropped, probably. And if so, that would probably go a ways to explaining the focusing issues.
