Darrell Young does it again. After the smashing success of his Mastering the Nikon D300 and Mastering the Nikon D700 books, he was set to write the book on the D90. The work was completed and we have delivered it to the printer. Although planned to be released at the end of October 2009, it will be on the shelves in the second half of September.

I just received my advanced copy of this book, which was a very pleasant surprise. My photo made it as the heading for chapter 6. I'm honored to be a part of this superb book and I thank everyone involved who picked my photo.
I would recommend this book to all D90 users, it has a wealth of information and is very well laid out and easy to understand.

I also received my advance copy yesterday. While not as surprised (I had been asked to provide a vertical crop of my snowboard race picture), equally honored. When I showed it to my 17 year old daughter last night she said "wow, that's your picture...in a real book even". It is a thrill to be included. Thanks!

I received my copy of the book in Tuesday's afternoon mail. My image was chosen for the opening photo of Chapter 1. I am truely humbled that one of my images was chosen for inclusion in the book. I want to thank all those responsible for this and I can honestly say that this book will be treasured by me for years to come. That said, I would highly reccommend this book to any D-90 owner looking for some instruction on how to use the D-90. It is extremely well laid out and very easy to read. There were many areas in operation of the D-90 where I had problems and I now have found some answers. It covers a broad spectrum of information for both the beginner and advanced Nikon D-90 users. I plan to use the included 50% voucher and upgrade my membership to the Gold level as my way of saying "Thank you" and supporting this great site.. Eddie

I received my copy last week when I was out of town. I really appreciated the use of my photo in Chapter 10, it is the first time I have been published in a book. The free copy was very much appreciated as well. Thanks again.

I am glad you are all happy. The NikoniansPress/Rocky Nook team works hard to get this out to print, primarily as a service to Nikonians members. Thank you all who contributed your wonderful images. Great shots!
The team is almost done with the Master your Nikon D5000 book. Our star writer, Darrell Young is now working on the D3000 one.

I got my copy of this book last week and I have been working my way through the chapters in the evenings. I totally agree with all of the positive comments on this book. I have had my D90 for about 6 months and I am learning a lot more about its capabilities.
Congratulations and thank you to the entire Nikonians team that put this book together. I most highly recommend it to all D90 owners.

Can someone point me to a table of contents or how this book is different from the users manual. The user manual looks very comprehensive. I just got Nikon D90. I had N65, N75, D50 3 years ago. Had a break frm nikon SLR. I want to buy this book, but not convinced of its value. I have not seen any sample pages or table of contents.

I have the owners manual and got to using the camera. Found the manual some what tedious to stay focused to, hence hard for me to learn from. I bought the Mastering the D90 book, and found it easy to read, with the info pouring out in what I would describe as a situational format. Relating those situations to things I have experienced made learning interesting, and hence I learned alot of stuff that I would never have known, where it not for Daryl"s book.
I recommend this book without reservation

I've had my copy for about a week now. Absolutely excellent! I purchased my D90 11 months ago and have been on the eye-out for a comprehensive book in this format ever since (with no luck until this now). Very well written, detailed descriptions and (my favorite) author opinions on nearly every setting based on user knowledge. I have learned as much about using my D90 from this book in the past week as I have in the past year without it!

I'm obviously late to the party since I just bought my D90 on Wednesday and got my copy of "Mastering the Nikon D90" on Saturday due to the miracle of expedited shipping. I've read a number of other camera guides over the years and this is one of the best. The photo's of menus and sub-menus, along with the author's comments about his personal settings for different situations, are especially useful. It's a definite keeper.

I purchased a D90 the beginning of November and ordered this book to supplement the manual. I love the book and appreciate the authors writing style and knack for making things easily understood.
I have however found 4 or 5 errors overlooked by the proofreaders just in the first four chapters. Is there an errata for this book somewhere? If not, is there someone or someplace that the errors could/should be reported so they can be corrected in future printings?
#30. "RE: Mastering the Nikon D90 - NikoniansPress Book" In response to Reply # 29
Inside the front cover of my copy is a sticker directing the reader to the publisher's website (www.rockynook.com) to get corrections for pages 80-85. I seem to remember that the publisher also had a way to contact the author.
So, I would go to the publisher's website and make them aware of the errors that you have found. They can then post a correction sheet for downloading and make the changes in any future editions of the book.

Your copy probably got into the supply chain before mine did and before the errors were discovered. Some publishers would not have taken the time to put in the sticker and I applaud rockynook for doing so.

This is my first post in the forum. I joined after getting this excellent book. I tried two other books and I believe they were another way for writing the manual. This book made me really understand not only the D90, but the digital world as well. I come from the film era, since 1979, and the D90 was the first entry to the digital photography. This book made it an easy move to a sophisticated world, at least from my point of view.

Welcome to Nikonians, Selfar!
I'm glad you are now one of us. It makes me happy that my book helped you join us.
Understanding the workflow involved in digital photography is a detailed study. I tried to balance my Mastering the Nikon D90 with information on using the camera, plus basic digital knowledge on things like the histogram along with the exposure metering systems.
It is a pleasure to hear from readers. It makes the large effort to create a book worthwhile. Enjoy your membership here, and as you grow in digital knowledge, please try to help others less knowledgeable than yourself.

I'm glad you like the book. Thanks for letting others know. If you bought it from Amazon.com, would you take a moment to do a short book review there? It will sure help book sales this time of the year. I appreciate it!

I write for firearm and motorcycle magazines. Digital cameras are a relatively new endeavor for me. I build and shoot extremely accurate long range rifles (talk about "point and shoot!") and do lots of long distance touring on motorcycles. Check out my web site if you have any interest in these areas. www.rvbprecision.com

I can't believe I was also hooked on this book for days and couldn't put it down and it's non-fiction! Before, the focusing and metering systems - AF points, modes etc - were a bit of a mystery, but now I really understand how they work. Thanks Darrell for a great read. Best, Rod

I received a Nikon D90 for Christmas. I have never researched photography before so am a complete novice. This book is excellent, and I would highly recommend it to any D90 user. Everything is very easy to follow, and the style relaxed and informative. I am loving my new hobby, and my knowledge has been accelerated immeasurably by this book. Thank you.

This way over do. I received my advance copy sometime ago and I'm very excited to be part of such a great book. My photo made it onto page 24, the header for chapter 2. It's a great book, really written well and I've been through two times already! Thank you so much for the opportunity. Cheers!

after hearing about "Mastering the D90" I went out and picked up a copy yesterday and I have to say I'm very impressed with the way the book is laid out as well as the writing style. Previously I had borrowed a friends D40 along with a copy of "D40 for Dummies" that I found to be useful to someone that is brand new to the world of photography as i am. I quickly realized that after reading the users manual for the D90 that I would want another book. This is a far more comprehensive book with much more detail and technical info yet still easy enough for a nube like myself. excellent job!! thanks so much for a great resource!

Precious advices! After reading the book, I bought the Sigma APO 150-500mm, because I saw the picture of the bird in "Mastering"... I am always amazed at the pictures obtained with this equipment. It worths and never could be possible if I had never read the book.

I have had my D90 now for almost a month, and I was fairly discouraged reading the manual and trying to understand the "ocean" of features this camera has, my last serious camera was a Minolta XG-7, so I'm light years away from todays' photography. This book just brought it all into focus(no pun intended). Not just telling me how to use the features but giving me an understanding of why they exist and when to use them. Whats a histograph, well I know what it is now and how to use the information it conveys, I still have lots to learn but this book is a must if your a novice with this sophisticated piece of equipment.

I now notice that Åmazon literally has dozens of "how to" specifically for the D90. But if jr says this is a good one then I'm going to wait.
As to this specific Nikonian book amazon.com like B&N has reviews, used ones for sale (at a higher price than new ones) and some new ones from third party dealers.
This all strikes me as really strange. I am used to books "slipping out" often from review copies and someone gets greedy and tries to sell it for more than new because of antipated demand but this is absolutely crazy. Anyway if you want one right now it would appear you could buy a brand new one from amazon.com.
Given my (lack of) love for amazon i plan to wait for three weeks until B&N ships mine.

I recently upgraded from D80 to a D90 and wanted to purchase this book but Amazon shows it taking 1-3 mos to ship. Barnes and Noble doesn't have any copies to sell. Any suggestions on where I can get a copy ?

What a book! I was put off last week when I went to Amazon and saw shipping 2-3 months. Then I looked around and saw underneath the listing, new copies for sale, just not from Amazon. I picked Book Depository and ordered and got the book in 12 days.
Great book, I have only finished first chapter on setting up the camera. Digital Darrell really does a great job of stripping away confusion and explaining. Book is on high quality paper with color images. Get the book, you won't be sorry. Thanks Darrell.

I just got a call from our publishing house to inform me that Mastering the Nikon D90 has been reprinted and shipped to the distributor. The delivery date for the books is July 14th. You should see supply in the stores and online soon thereafter.
The demand for the book exceeded the supply for a period of a few weeks. Everyone that has a backorder in place will receive their book shortly.
To the hundreds of Nikonians that have ordered Mastering the Nikon D90—and are awaiting their backorders—I truly appreciate your patience. I've been assured by the publisher that this should not occur again.

I finally found the book in Nobles & Barnes while driving around Michigan! I was looking for it in Toronto on the same day and can't find it. I was so happy coz the only way you could get it is ordering it on line. Luckily one copy left and somebody put it on the wrong section. I haven't finish reading it but I am learning a lot already. Thanks to Darrell Young and Nikonian Press for this wonderful book! I am enjoying my Nikon D90!

I finally received my book from Amazon ! Started reading it last night and learned a few things already that I never new about my d90. As a previous owner of a d80 I had a good working knowledge of many of the features. I like the quality of the book, the organization and of course the ease of reading. Thanks Darrell for such a great book - it was worth the wait !

Fabulous book for a fabulous camera. Reminds me of the computer books'What the manual should have told you". Just the histogram/white balance/Aperture priority explanations & suggestions for 'normal' settings is worth the price. Excellent!!

I've owned my D90 for a few months, and have been using the owners manual. I purchased this book through B&N, prior to joining this site a few days ago. Its an awesome help and not dry like an owners manual. Well worth the price.

I have ordered this book today after reading all the nice reviews here. Unfortunately, my supplier will have to import the book, so it will take 3-4 weeks to receive the shipment. I had the book 'D90 for Dummies' but found that it did not go into much details. So, will look forward to Darrell's book eagerly.
Can someone let me know where I can find a list books published by Nikonians?

New member here. My wife gave me this book last Christmas ('09). I wasn't even aware there were such creatures as Nikonians. I like it very much as it explains settings and the rationale for using them. Actually, I kind of like the rockynook series of books. I own two others, both by Alain Briot - "Mastering Landscape Photography" and "Mastering Photographic Compostion...."

I just became a member of Nikonians, largely on the basis of this book, which I recently purchased.
Someone may have already made a comment along these lines, but I don't want to search all the comments.
It appears that there is a kindle version, but I have a Barnes and Noble NookColor. It takes books in epub format. There is no epub version of this book, although there are of other Nikon D90 books. It would be really helpful if you could get together with Barnes and Noble and make the book available in epub format. Then I can download it to my android smartphone which has a nook app. Since I almost always carry my phone with me, I could then refer to the book when needed in the field.
Added later: I just discovered that I can download for free the Amazon kindle app to my phone. Using that I have downloaded the kindle version of Mastering the Nikon D90. I wouldn't want to read the book that way, so I am glad I purchased the "book version" of the book. But it will come in handy when I am out in the field without the manual and I need to check some detail.

Where is this book available? I have had my D90 for a while but there are plenty of things I haven't used yet, mostly as I am not sure what they do. I can always try the "trial and error" approach, but a book like this dedicated to the D90 would be great!

I got my copy of Mastering the D90 from Amazon.com a few years ago. They still have it and now it is discounted for $23 and free shipping which is a good deal. Amazon says they have 16 copies left. It's a great reference book to have. It is a soft cover book with glossy type pages so it will hold up for the many times have looked through it and is very well put together with screen shots of the actual menu screens. It's definitely worth every penny.

I have owned my D-90 for awhile and have been "playing" with it. In spite of my lack of knowledge of the cameras potential I have been fortunate enough to even get a few shots published. I just happened to purchase a copy of Darrell's book and it has opened my mind to the wonderful potential that this older Nikon affords. The book is very well written and easy enough for a novice to understand like myself. The photo illustrations are so helpful and you can see what your camera should exhibit when you follow the simple steps. I can already see a vast improvement in some shots over the settings that I would use in the past. Thanks Darrell for this work that resulted in your "love affair" with Nikon's. LD5030
